.REPORTS.

The German steamship Duburg reports that she left Saigon on the 3rd Instant Had light. south-west wind and fine weather,

s'o'clock. Business in shares since the beginning of the month presents few features of! general interest, and no really important movements have to be chronicled.. Nor are therd any indications apparent that legitimate business in the transter of stocks bas much chance for some time to come of recovering from the several severe shocks which have of late so. greatly disturbed public confidence. How- wyer. "that is a subject to which we propose leveling a special article at an early upquortunity, so that it need not be further discussed here. Banks, after stepping as low as 155 per cent. premium on the strength, or, rather the alleged weakness of the forthcoming Report, have gradually recovered their old position, and are now wanted at 159. It is perhaps as e. well to add that very few sales have been reparted. With the exception of Cantons, which are now quoted at So, there have been | CHINA COAST METEOROLOGICAL BATAVIA, British steamer, 1,661, W. H. Watton,

no changes, in Insurance stocks. Docks have continued fairly firm at froin 31 to 33 per cent, premium, but excepting at few insignificant transactions for forward "alates" no business has been reported. A lew transfers of Steamboats have been -arrangeit at $49; and 220, and there are now selbeers at 215 ex, div. The China and Manila Co.'s shares have changed hauls at 12 and 115 since our last report, and continue in fairly good demand at the higher figure · China Sugars have, of Course, monejolised the greatest amount of attention, and business to a slight extent has been arranged. at rates ranging from 487 to get the Infter being the present.

The declaration of an interim rate. dividend of 6 per cent, and the report that an additional fifty thousand dollars-- boshles the profits on two extensive ship- ments are already available for distrib- ution to shareholders, have doubtless had considerable effect in maintaining, the high rates. They have also led to a very great deal of unpleasant insinuations by persons more or less jaterested in the success of the Company, which we think had better been left unsaid unless those who have constituted themselves the opponents of the General Agents we're in a position_to prove their assertions and had the courage of their opinions sufficiently to publicly formulate a direct charge or take the proper means of having a thorough inquiry into the entire management. The principle involved in this China Sugar dead-lock is of far more consequence than a successful "corner" in the Share Market, and if what the persons connected with the now notorious symilicate allege with some. authority be true, we imagine they have a duty to the public to perform beyond their own self-interest. But at all events the indulgenceofthe insinuations now generally current in certain circles is neither fair nor manly if a grievance exists let it be handled openly, as only by that method can it be dealt with effectively. The Tramway Co's shares have been dealt in at from 210 to 270 per cent. premium, and are still wanted at the latter quota tion: Pinjams are having a rest, but there are shares on the market at to. In other stocks there is nothing to report.
