THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1888,

ennigh to be enjoyable if board aftener is it is rendered by him, even if they do say that "he Cannot sing atid has no voice." It would be well Indeed if the managers can take a hint from this, and give a repetition of some of the picces again, instead of attempting to render new ones at almost every performance. They will thus be able to do themselves more credit, and the Hongkong public will not be less thankful to them. It is understood that "The Tramp" which is to be presented to-morrow night (Wednesdas) and also on Thursday, has had a greater number of rehearsals than "Jack Sheppard and therefore may be expected to go off smoothly, its nature can be guessed from the advertisement. We would warn some of our readers against the notice in the Daily Press which is on a par with its musical critic's skill,

The Malta correspondent of the Central News in accuracy. for it announced a performance writes, under June 11th, as follows:-A serious to-night instead of to-morrow, Those who accident recently occurred on board 'H.M.S know Granny will make allowance for it, how-Dreadought, while in 'Suds Bay. The steam ever, on the ground that it is as usual, and that her columns often teen with blundern.

Government would consider seriously the desirability of adopting the suggestion unan imously agreed to by, the Conference of the Australian colonies, to the effect that it would. be advisable for the Imperial Government to cater into diplomatic negotiations with the Chinese Government in order that a treaty might be concluded between this country and Chinn for a satisfactory settlement of the difficolt question of the wholesale emigration of Chinese to the Australian colonies. Baron H. de Worms stated that the suggestions and recommendą. |tions made by the Australasian Conference with regard to the Chinese labour question are receiv ing the fullest and most careful attention of the Government.

CREMATION IN HONGHONG.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE " Honorowa T-L=graph." S-Can you tell me why the Sikhs are allowed to create their dead in a public place- a place not quite one hundred yards from one of the most fe quented roads to be found in the Colony? This was what I say the other evening. The spot pitched upon was close to the western side of the Mahomedan cemetery and not five yards bom a little stream which supplies its part of the water used by many n family house in its vicinity; leaving thereby the means for its polia- tion when the next rain comes,

Have they no place of their own where they could do their roastings far from the ublic garo and without the chance of polluting the waters used by the people? In other countries they have a place specially set apart for this purpose; why not in Hongkong? The sight was enough to take any man sick. I hope for the sake of the ladies taking their afternoon walks on this particular road that they may be spared such another sigh Thanking you for the insertion of this in your much valued columns,

I am, Sir..

Yours faithfully,.

HOME NEWS.

Two French journalists—one representing the Gaulois and one the fatis were sent out of Germany from Berlin on the 20th June, It ppears that the representative of the Gaulois had seen from San Remo a statement reflecting o the present Emp-ror and Empress and their relations with the Empress Victoria, and that the correspondent of the Matin had sent reflec tions upon the German army, inspired by a Russian staff officer.

Mr. Condon, M.P., was released from Cork Jail on the 20th ulto, on the campletion of the sentence of one month's imprisonment for inciting persons not to pay the Leahy tax.. He was met outside the prison by the Mavor, several mem- bets of the Corporation, and a large crowd, and escorted to the city. Addressing the people, Mr. Condon said they were prepared to carry on the struggle for legislative independence irres- pective of the consequences, and were prepared to endure cheerfully any suffering which would help that end..

; The Criminal Investigation Department of Dublin Castle are engaged in investigating a plot which the fare police have brought to light in murder Colonel Alfred Turner, divisional mavistrate for the counties of Clare and Kerry. and Distric-Inspector Hill, of Ennis, who has been one of the most nttive members of the forre. Since the return of Col. Turner from a

brief holiday in England extra precautions have been taken for his safety. It is probable that a special Crimes Act Inquiry will be held in a few days, and the authorities hope hy this means to unravel the plot.

A telegram from St. Paul de Lonnda states tht unfavourable news of Mr. Stanley's ex- pedition has been received at Leopoldville. The intelligence comes down to the middle of April, t says that after traversing the Upper Aurwhimi region Ms. Stanley struck into a very rough and mountainous country, where his passage was disputed by the native tribes, Continuous fighting took place, in the course of which he was rather severely wounded by an arrow. Many of his men had deserted, and others, including the Europeans, had been ill. An expedition was being organised to proceed to his assistance.

In Dublin, on the Ark ullo, Judge Boyd granted a conditional order of attachment against the Swinfont Hoard of Guardians for proceeding against Mr. James Taafe, of London, for arrears of pon's rate on his estate in the county Mayo since 1885, instead of collecting the rates from the tenants. The Judge, said that the tenants were

primarily liable, and able to pay consider ing that they had paid no rent for three years. He added that this was an instance of what the Guardians would do in the same direction. if

their powers and privileges were extended. They had clearly violated their duty in collusion with the tenants.

picket-boat, which, with coal, water, and engines weighs about ten tons, was being hoisted in by the steam derrick, when a holt gave way, and the boat cmshed down some soft. on to her steel crutches. The steamboat hoist was smashedl and the iron stanchions broken up. The crutches pierced the picket-bost right through, pinning it to the deck so firmly that it was found impossible to remove it with the appliances on board Captain Prince Louis of Battenberg was standing on deck immediately underneath the picket-bant when it fell, and he had a very narrow racape from being crushed in death or severely injured. The chief leading staker, who was standing near his Royal Highness, had an arm fractured and his head severely cut, and several men near him were rather badly hurt. Two men who were in the picket-boat escaped with flesh wounds. The boat cannot be repaired. The damage is estimated at £700.

In the House of Lords Lord Salisbury called attention to the constitution of their Lordships House, and presented on June 18th a Bill on the subject, the provisions of which are directed to the. creation of life-Peers and to the expulsion fron the House of members guilty of discreditabic practices. He explained that in the opinion ef the Government the privilege of creating lif Peers ought to be guarded, as it was one much more likely to be abused by a Ministry than was that of the creation of hereditary Peers. The Bill proposed that Her Majesty should have power to create by letters patent Peers for life, but that more than five life Peers should be created in any one year, and that there should be no more than fifty of them at any one, time. There would be twe categories, out of one of which three life Peers, and out of the other of which two life Pedis, might be created in year. The first includeil persons who had been for two-yen's Judges of a Superior Court in any part of the United Kingdom, persons of at least the rank of re r admiral or major-general. Ambassadors: Extra ordinary, persons who had been five years Gover- nors-General or Governors in any part of Her Majesty's dominions outside the United King dom, or Lieutenants-Governor in India. The second category, embraced all persons not in- clued in the first whom Her Majesty might think fit to create life Peers for special merit. As in black sheep among the members of that Flause, he doubted that the evit existed to the extent which some persons supposed, but as it did exist the Bill gave power to the Sovereign, on an address from the House of Lords, to deprive any Peer of his right to receive a writ of summons, It, however, enabled Her Majesty, on the advice of her Ministers to again

issue a writ of summons to a Peer who had been expriled, and thus to restore him to that position of which he had been deprived. He moved the first reading of the Bill-After a prolonged discussion, the Bill was read a first time.

remarked that when a man tells the honest truth many others. It is all about myself, but have about himself he is all the ore likely to be of use to his fellow-creaturen. To begin, then, you must know I had long been more or less subject to attacks of bronchitis, a complaint that you are aware is very common and troublesome in Great Britain In certain seasons of the year, Some months ago I had a very severe turn of it, worse, I think, than I ever had before. It was probably brought on by my catching cold, as we are all apt to do when we least expect it. Weeks passed by, and my trouble proved to be very obstinate. It would not yield to medicine, and as I also began to have violent racking pains in my limbs and back, I became greatly alarmed. 1 could neither eat nor sleep. If I had been a fecule, sickly man, I should have thought less strangely of it; but as, on the contrary, I was hearty and robust. I feared some new and terrible

I thing had got hold of me, which might make my strength of no avail against it. I say, that was the way I thought.

Presently I could not even lie down for the pain all over my body. I asked my doctor what he thought of my condition, and he frankly said; "I am sorry to have to tell you that you are getting worse. This no frightened my friends, as well as myself, that they said Thomas, you must go to the Hospital, it may be your only chance for life?"

But I didn't want to go to the hospital, Who does, when be thinks he can pastibly get along
