We are glad to be able to record an abstract of the treaty of amity concluded on the 18th April between China and Portugal. The treaty settles finally the frequent and angry questions that have arisen between the Portuguese Govern ment of Macao and the Chinese officials of the Liang Kuang at recurring intervals from the date of the Portuguese occupation of Macao, A.D. 1536, until lately.

provinces.
Portugal enjoys henceforth without question undisturbed possession of Macao; China will be able to collect her lawful dues without undue expenses for revenue cruisers; smuggling, if not entirely suppressed, will be brought within manageable proportions, and the very serious Cangers the Empire that would certainly cao ever became a postile fortress ensuri or base wat now be averted.-Chinese Times.

than as interlopers, whose occupation was an sufferance. But when the new Oplum Convention was made with Hongkong it became absolutely necessary to secure the loyal co- operation of Macao. If Macao had refused to enter into the part the port would have at once become the depot for opium smuggling, and the treaty with Hongkong, which contained a condition to the effect that the document was to be nullified if Macao did not become A party to it, would have become useless. Two consequences would have followed: the increased revenue from opium, which adds some Tla. 6,000,000 to the Imperial and provincial treasuries, would have been lost; or, if any attempts were made to blockade, Macao. by Customs cruisers and guard-boats, the cost of the flotilla would have absorbed all the increase of revenue, and would certainly have led to counter and hostile proceedings on the part of Por- tugal against China that ere long would have ended in war between the two countries. Besides, there are grave reasons for taking extreme pre- cautions in the Canton provinces for the avoidance of frontier disputes. The population is restless, and to some extent discontented secret societies | abound, for the most part 'anti-dynastic, and Macro might, in case of hostilities with China, have unwillingly become the head-quarters of the Cantonese revolutionary partics, and in such probable case the Liang Kuang would have been again the theatre of a rebellious movement that | would wreak vast damage to the Empire.
These considerations weighed to some extent upon some members of the Yamon, and Sir Robert Hart, as 5
to his Macao Con A sequence vention of 1886, was authorized to open nego. tiations in Lisbon through his London agent, Mr. J. D. Campbell, so that full and satisfactory diplomatic relations should be made between the two countries. On the 16th March, 1887, after an anxious discussion of many difficult questions, a protocol of four articles was agreed to, in winch by adroit phrase China legalizes the perpetual occupation and government of Macan by Portugal without ostensible ccasion, and Por tugal, in return for distinct right of possession, engages not to alienate Mace by sale or other wise without the consent of China.
Last year Senhor de Souza Roza, empowered to act as special Envoy of Portugal, came to Peking to arrange a definitive treaty.
