TELEGRAMS.
THE CROWN PRINCE OF ITALY. On the 4th insi., we published the following Renee's telegram-
LONDON, May 21st.
· “Admirat Ryder has fallen into the Thames
and was drowact, together with the Prince of
Naples."
Cheat sympathy for this sadaffair was naturally expressed on all sides for the King and Queen of Italy, the Prince of Naples being their only dlála sonde heir apparent to the Throne. It now appears very probable that the Prince was
and drowned, and was not in any way connected with the fatal accident in Admiral Ryder, The mistake would appear in have originated through Renter's pete, after here or at home, muddling up the triggram in some extraordinary fashion
that respués explanation. On the same date that the above message appeared, we also printed the following
"Several persons have been injured by the explosion of a dynamite shellat artillery practice." Our Shanghai morning contemporary publishes these telegrams in the following shape :-
ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF ADMIRAL KYDER
LONDON, May 2nd. Admiral Ryder has fallen into the Thames and been drowned.
"ACCIDENT TO THE HEIR OF ITALY.
The heir apparent of Italy, Prince Victor Emanuele, has been slightly injured by the explosion of a dynamite shell during artillery practice.
As there is nothing ambiguous or uncertain in the warding of the N. C. Daily News tele- grains, we think their accuracy, may be safely relied on, and that another nail has been driven
into the coffin of our feeble and unsatisfactory local service of Renter's messages.

THE virtuous resolve of our Government to forbid the sale of Manila lottery tickets in the Chiony, (says the Straits Times) will soon take effect in the direction of stopping an active transit business. Hitherto, agents here supplied tickets customers in Burmah, and India inclined to try their luck in the Manila lottery, The Gambling Ordinance will operate in leading them to order the coveted articles direct from Manila, The Ordinance will come into operation. on the 1st May. It will be a wonder, indeed, should the enactment prove impervious to coach and six. On the principle that where there happens to be a will, there is sure to be a way, the excitement of lottery gambling will leave no one may be pretty certain that those who love stone unturned to baulk the Ordinance. The knowledge that they are plucking forbidden fruit will add rest to the enjoyment.

WILLIAM DALE, aged zt, a marine belonging to H.M.S. Satellite, was drowned in the harbour last night, near Praya East, when going off to his ship. It appears that about 8.30 some of the residents in the vicinity heard shouts for help proceeding from the harbour, and on rushing down to the pier adjoining Messrs, Geo Fenwick and Co's engineering establishment found two men struggling in the water. One had fallen overboard and the other jumped in to try and save his comrade. Unhappily the effort proved unsuccessful. The body of the drowned man was recovered, by the police this morning, and an inquest was held this afternoon,
