PİRACY AND HIDDEN TREASURE.

When the Manchus came and established the seat of the Government in the heart of the old Shen Yang, a new day dawned for the city, as well as for the land. The population increased; and in 1632, twelve years before Shun Chih took his seat upon the Dragon Throne, his father set about the building of a new wall, the wall which now surrounds the city about to li in circumference, thirty-five Chinese fret.in height, with parapets of 70 feet and 18 feet wide. The gates of the old Ming city, had been four; the new city was provided with double that number, two in either side; twelve lofty lowers were built, four at the corners of the city, and one surmounting each gate. Fifty years afterwards the Emperor, Kang Hal visited Moukden, and soon afterwards the extensive suburbs which had grown up around the city were enclosed by an earthen wall with eight gates, and over 30 in circumference, Now, in building this wall, a long strip of water some little distance from the south-east corner of the city wall had to be taken into consideration. We call it the Sino-ho, but it is really more lake than river, a sort of reservoir of springs which abband in this particular locality. The water oozes out here and there and everywhere from the sides and bed of the river, and slowly passes away southwards to the River Hwen, a distance of 4 or 5

It seems to be admitted that the logical result of the match would be a revolutionary explosion in the Balkan peninsula and perhaps a European war. Touched by their daughter's love and constancy, the Emperor and Empress Victoria had given reluctant consent which, owing to Bis marck's representations, has been withdrawn.

The coming of Queen Victoria here to visit her daughter and granddaughter is viewed with alarm, as some demonstration of the undoubtedly popular dislike of the Empress and Queen mother apprehended, while her ardent advocacy af Battenberg's suit is thought liable to cool the existing cordial relations of England and Ger many. An unsympathetic editorial in the Lon, don Star wired here, that the Queen leave Berlin And the Battenbergs alone, is greeted with sp. plauso.

The following passage, which occurred in the tonst given by the Crown Prince to Bismarck at the latter's birthday banquet on the tat of April, The whole imperial family hope the Chancellor will be to the present what he was to the late monarch," the Cologne Gasstfe regards as evid. chce that Emperor Frederick will not consent to Bismarck's resignation.

The National Zaitung says tha renewed efforts obtain the consent of the Emperor: to the marriage of his daughter Viatoria to Alexander of Battenberg have not been successful, and for this reason there are no longer any grounds for the secret conflict between Blamarck and the Emperor, and therefore there is no question wholever of Bismarck's resigning.

It is again affumed to-night that Emperor Frederick insists upon the marriage of his daughter to Prince Alexander, Doubts are expressed in well-informed circles as to whether the differences between the Emperor and Bismarck, which are believed to extend "also to matters of internal policy, can be arranged.
