TAM-knowing how to work the mines, which, in course of time, I think could easily be overcome, Regarding my experience in the Tamchow and Tay-ya-zhan mines, it is hardly necessary for me to refer to that work here today as full accounts of it have already appeared in the Hongkong papers. But, suffice it to two years ago when we fired the first shot at the top tunnel of the Tai-yu-shan mine, this place was partially inhabited by Chinese only, but now, by means of capital, and the work of hand and brains, we have transformed this little Bay Into a western seaside resort for visitors and pleasure seeking pic-nic parties and we actually have take this opportunity to give you and these our Foreign staff living here with their families, concerned in the mines, the shareholders, a little insight into our expenditure and the amount of work done since November, 1883, which are as follows:-
In response to Mr. Ho Amei's invitations to visit the smelting works of the above mine, a numerous concourse of people assembled yesterday morning on board the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company's steamer Honam lying alongside the Canton Wharf, and proceeded to Lantao Island where the mine and works are located. We bardly remember having ever seen a steamer ao crowded with passengers as the fine and popular paddle- boat of the Canton line was yesterday. From four to five hundred Europeans among whom the ladies of Hongkong mustered in great force found ample room to sit and saunter about the spacious saloons and the splendid promenade deck of the foam, while an equal number of and made themselves respectable Chinese swarmed on the lower deck circumstances would allow. The list of visitors Included General Cameron, General Gordon, Colonel Anderson, Major Ellis, and other officers of the 58th Regiment and Garrison, several officers of the Royal Navy, the Hon. P. Ryrie, Hon. J. Bell-Irving, Hon. Wong Shing, Mr A. J. Leach, Acting Puisne Judge, Mr. J. J, Francis, QC., and a large number of leading residents. Mr. Ho Amei, the host, was ubiquitous in his altentions to the visitors, and the catering which had been entrusted to the solicitous care of the proprietors of the Victoria Hotel left nothing to be desired. At about a quarter in 12 m, the

Mr. Francis said it was his pleasing duly to propose the health of Mr. Candler and those who had been associated with him in this under- taking. In congratulating. Mr. Ho Amei he thought they ought also to congratulate him on acquiring the services of such a thoroughly capable mining engineeras Mr. Candler, Heneed not remind them what great difficulties there were such an enterprise as that, and it must have to contend with in bringing to a successful issue required a vast amount of energy and labour to attain the results which they had just witnessed. It was therefore with the greatest pleasure that be hoped they would join him in drinking to the health of those who had been instrumcuint. in carrying out that undertaking. He asked them to drink to the health of Mr. Candler.
Mr. Candler, in responding, sald--Ladles and gentlemen, if you will bear with me a few minutes, will try and take myself heard. In the first place let me thank you very heartily for the kind way
which you have received my bealth and that of those associated with me in this enterprise, as proposed by Mr. Francis, and I trust we shall always ment the good wishes that have to-day been exprested. Further, I think Mr. Ho Amel is to be congratulated in securing the services of such capable men-you will of course understand that I am not alluding to myself. I must say that the resuks we have attained are largely due to the hearty co-operation of those who have been associated with mein this work. I have had men who have gone away on the termination of their three years engagement but on the other hand I have men who have worked loyally and heartily in carrying this work to a successful issue. We have had a great deal of trouble to contend with in one way and another
before reaching the stage we have arrived at to day. That we have arrived at this stage is largely due to the pluck of Mr. Ho Amei, (Cheers.) Although I have had great difficulties to contend with, I do not suppose that they have been one quarter of what he has had to deal with. He has, at all times, placed very great confidence', in me and in all that I have advised, and no one can wish more than I do that this enterprise may

THE Foochow Echo anys-In the tea districts the usual preparations, for the new leaf are rumoured to be very gloomy for the coming season. "Doubts" seem to be the order of the day in matters concerning the business. Last -year was certainly a very salutary one as a lesson to many of our enterprising but penniless celestial tea merchants, who we positively blame to be the cause of all the deterioration in quality and price, for they are the real inventors and sellers of the tremendous amount of rubbish that is placed.on the market every year, and the respit is that other respectable dealers who used to buy and place in the market pure leaf, are now compelled to give up any idea of fair dealing in order to remain in the trade at all. If a clean sweep of this grand class of tea dealers can be effected, China tea will be at once clevated to lus old standard which the world so much appreciated. The following are the Orders of the Day for the Legislative Council to be held on Wednesday
18th inst, at 4 pimusti
