An accident of a very serious character, and which narrowly escaped being attended with.

THE Peking Gazette of March 20th tells us that His Excellency Liu Chin-tang, Governor of Chinese Turkestan, has presented a fresh application to the Emperor for permission to retire from the public service. Liu describes himself as sick to the very bones, he is troubled by stomach disorders and dysentery, finds a difficulty in bis utterance, and is apprehensive of a stroke of paralysis on one side. But while dreading the consequences which will ensue if he continues at his present past, Liu hopes that with rest and medical treatment he may be cured of his ailments, and as his age is not great he would thus become available. for 'employment again.
