and China beyond all doubt, has not, so far, affected the market status of Bank|~~- scrip to the extent that might reasonably have been anticipated. The stock has certainly depreciated, but the confidence of holders has prevented anything in the shape of a panic from setting in. A fair amount of business has been effected this morning at various rates. For the end of the month shares have changed hands, at first at 188 per cent. premium and latterly at 187. 'Sales have also been booked at 193 for January 31st. Shares could be placed at igo for the end of the year, a slight de- mand existing on these terms, probably for covering purposes. For cash there are small buyers at 187 and sellers at 1871; no doubt some business will be arranged at one of these rates in the course of the day. A small lot of China Traders' Insur ance shares has changed handa at 72}, and there are still sellers at that rate.: China Sugars continue slowly but surely on the decline. Some covering transactions have been arranged this morning at 133 for the end of the year, but cash sellers rule the market at 132, and a lower figure would doubtless be accepted in several quarters. Other quotations remain as per subjoined list.

4 o'clock p.m.

A.considerable business in Banks has been put through since noon, several hun- dred shares having beennegociatedat 187, and afterwards át 186, the stock closing weak, with sellers at the lower rate. From

the tone of the market one would feel justi- fed in confidently predicting a-still-further retrogression, especially as the latest telegram from Europe-published else where-on matlers political, places China's intentions with regard to the Tonquin question beyond dispute. No other trans- fers have been reported, but it may be noted that China Sugars occupy a very unsteady position, holders displaying great anxiety to sell.
