"3rd November, 1883. Today, Wu Ta-chang, Commander-in-chief and high Commissioner of the Athoor District, arrived at Taku, from Newchwang, in a Chi- nesc man-of-war. It is said he is coming up here from Taku in the Haean, and for this occasion, the C.M.S.N. Co. have decorated their premises with red bunting, and the yellow dragon flag is flying to let His Ex- cellency know where to land. All the high officials have gone down to welcome him, and even the great Li Hung-chang will pay his respects by welcoming him on the Bund. Our to do this because His Majesty has honoured Chinese friends inform me that Li has consented Wa by appointing him instead of Li Kung-ching, as High Commissioner and Commander-in-chief of Kwangsi, to act together with l'eng Yu-lin, who holds the same office of Kwang Tung, with French succeed in driving them out of Tongking, a view to drive the Black Flags back should the

The members of the Club Concordia enter tained Mr. Haas at a farewell dinner given at the Club on the evening of the 6th instant. Mr: P. G.. Hübbe, the President of the Club, pre sided, and among the guests were the German and American Consuls, the Chairman of the Municipal Council, Me. F. D. Cheshire, United States Assessor at the Mixed Court, and other prominent residents, the company numbering between sixty and seventy. A splendid dinner was served, and full justice having been done to the good things provided, the President pro- posed the health of Mr. Hass in a neat, eulogistic speech. Mr. Haas responded in English and German, and the warm reception accorded to his remarks gave ample proof of his great popularity. But one feeling prevailed, and that was that in the departure of Mr. Hans the community of Shanghai lose a most valuable public officer. We hear that different addresses are to be pre-ed to the Consulate there. sented to him before his departure.-Courier.

FUSAN, 15th October, 1883. Since my arrival in this part of the world, ! have endeavoured to ascertain how much truth there is in Mr. Hall's terse report of Korės, which issued some littletime since from the Eng- lish Consulate at your port. I cannow assure you. that many of his statements are Hittle short of perversions of the truth, and are likely to mis lead' considerably. I can only place such writ- ing on a par with the "tit-bits" supplied to the Mainichi Shimbun, by that "celebrated" or gon's Fusan correspondent, who is, be it remem- bered, a Japanese'subject.
A visit to this charming part of the world would soon remove from anyone's mind what- soever erroneous impressions had been made by the writings of much men as the Fusan corre spondent of the Mainichi Shimbun, whose epistles have brought forth exclamations of the greatest indignation from those Korean gentle
men to whom the same have been translated,
However, I do not desire to waste timp over a dry subject of this kind at present, and so wil pass on to a brief description of this port
