LONDON, October 9th. The Cesarewitch stakes were won by Don Juan, Hackness second, and Cosmos third. There wwenty-two starters. Bendigo led at a good pace from Cosmos, Pharamond, Preferment, Witchcraft and Don Juan, with Hackness, Faugh-a-Ballagh and Lizzie next, Giroflé, Sachem and Quicklime leading the others. When the leaders were six furlongs from home, Sachem and Girofle fell away beaten. Cosmos was in front at the bushes, but as the horses descended the hill-Don Juan drew out and won.

[This was one of the races which "Plunger" Walton was so confident of winning with his mare Giroflé. Walton la reported to have had an immense stake on the race.)
