·NOTES FROM JAPANESE PAPERS.

The Japanese soldiers stationed in Korea have been supplied with 300 hall cartridges each, sa as u' prepared for emergencies.

The Koreans are now selling considerable quantities of silver to our traders, and we hear that our Government have already bought Korean silver to the value of to,c20, 30 yen for coinage.

⚫Cranes with red heads are kept in the grounds attached to the palace of the Korean King, and his Majesty intends sending a pair to the Em- peror when next a Japanesë man-of-war returns home.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1883.

SHANGHAI.

The Grain Commissioner of Kiang Su, H. E. Wang and the Sub-prefects of Tsing poo, and Chin-Sisu arrived here yesterday afternoon, the 23rd Inst. They came to pay a complimentary visit to Viceroy Tso

We hear from reliable sources that H. E. Tro brought with him in the "Chin-chen"a quantity of sycee, valued at tacks 140,000. With this amount has to be paid-part of the expenses, incurred in building the Yangtare Guard Boats and some war material ordered by the Arsenal.

The High Mandarins should not visit civilized places. The abominable row they make is quite uselesss near civilization. When Li Chung Tang was here he drove people almost crazy by explosions of gunpowder all day and night. He very nearly blew up the writer; the first gun exploded just a step before him, as he was walk-

along the streets.

During the storm of the 8th instant the steamer Olta Mary was wrecked off Kagoshima. Messrs.rom what we have seen this morning, backed E. C. Kirby & Co., of the Ono Ironworks, have by the confident purchases of the owriers of the been employed to raise the vessel, and a num- ber of men started at once to commence opera tiona.

A man recently returned from Korea says that the price of everything has increased very much, The people are troubled in consequence, and attribute the rise to the immense quantity of copper cash recently placed in circulation. The appropriation for our Legation and soldiers will have to be doubled.

Should we report the performances of other stables, they would sink into insignific. ance beside the powers of Mr. Arthur, We know what he can do, and we believe that he can beat Mr.. Kelly and all others for the races we have mentioned. Anxiety and incapacity in the stable- have divulged the secret.—Mercury.

We (Osaka Shimpo) are informed that a woman living at Unagidani, Osaka, bas given birth to a monster. It has a mouth stretching from ear. The body is shaped like an ordinary infant, but the teeth are similar to those of a child six years old. On each side of the stomach are scales like those of a fish, the eyes have no pupils, and the hands no fingers. The monster, which seems to be very healthy, makes a noise like a duck quacking.-Hiogos.

ARRIVAL OF TSO TSUNG TANG

IN SHANGHAI

H.E. the Viceroy of Nanking arrived here last night (Oct. 21st) at about 6 o'clock from Woo- sung. He came up in one of the Foachow-built "Corvettes" and "was followed by eight"more"war" vessels, of which number three were built at Shanghal, one at Foochow and the four others belong to the socalled "Alphabetical" class of gunboats. All the nine vessels, whilst pro- ceeding up

the river, at a very reckless speed, kept up an uninterrupted canonade, which was intermingled with the sound of war-trumpets responded to by each other in all possible key. notes. By the time the vessels came abreast the Kin-lee-yuen wharf it was quite dark, and their manoeuvring to get a berth became rather indistinguishable. The smoke, caused by the constant firing of guns, wrapped everything in completo darkness, and it is, greatly to be wondered that no accident took place, as there is a great deal of merchant shipping. moored in this section of the river. In the meantime a great number of banner-bearers mustered at the pontoons of the Kin-lee-yuen wharf, besides few dozen soldiers and the celebrated band from the Shanghai Arsenal, consisting of four buglers and two tambours who at intervals raised their voices.. Several launches occasionally neared the wharf, in one of which the Viceroy was expected to land, and a few dozen mandarins were seen rushing up to these, to find themselves every time disap pointed After waiting for about an hour, the news reached the shore-that the Viceroy would not land that evening, and the whole party dis persed shortly afterwards.
