CHINA SUGARS. .
TO THE EDITOR OF THE "Hongkong 'TELEGRAPH.” SIR,-In your-issite of the 9th inst. you com ment upon the action of the General Managers of the China Sugar Refinery with reference to certainrumours concerning the company's affairs which prevailed in the colony a few days ago, Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s reply to the letter, signed by certain shareholders, merely said that the rumours particularised in the petition bave no, foundation; but no particulars were given of the quantity of sugar, (sold and unsold) in stock. Rumour has it that purchasers of sugar (principally Chinese) bave refused to take delivery, notwithstanding the pressure brought upon them by the company's solicitors. The obstinacy of the Chinese in refusing to take delivery of the sugaris said still to continue and if this is so it must therefore have resulted in the accumulation of some 50,000 piculs in stock. The deterioration in coloring and loss in melting in such a case would be enormous.
The great reduction of the work or rather the slackness of business in shipping sugar by the China Sugar Refinery, caused by the London and other markers being glutted; the loss in the ac- cumulation of an enormous quantity like 50,000 piculs; the general monthly heavy expenses of the company exclusive of the General Managers' princely commission for managing the sugar business; the advent of the Talkoo Refinery in the beginning of 1884-which will be conducted on most economical principles--and the ac- tive operations of the Lee Yuen: Sugar Com | pany, who, I hear, intend to enlarge their establish- ment, should make investors reflect seriously on the present situation. In view of this rather deplorable state of affairs, it is much to be won dered at that the public have so much faith in the prospects of this stock before assuring them selves that the rumors, which have been so freely ventilated, are actually without foundation,
Enclosing my card,
CRITICAL
I remain, Your faithfully,

Ld., he-as well as all other shareholders-can satisfy himself on any matters concerning the Company's business by applying to the General Mans- gers, in accordance with the form prescribed by the Articles of Association. It appears to us that most of these rumbura are circulated by interested stock-jobbers for motives which are too apparent to require explanation' atʼour hands. Ed. Hongkong Telegraph.||'.

The boy's crying attracted the attention of some country people, who followed with torches the tiger's track. They reached at last a rocky mound where they found two old tigers and three young ones. As it was too late in the night, they dared not proceed any further. On the following day they gathered about one hundred men, who were armed with all sorts of weapons, and they went back to the tiger's · cave. The tigers, secing themselves attacked by such a great number of people, ran away in all directions. Pursuing the tigers three miles, they managed to catch one of the young ones, who bit two of the natives so seriously that their lives are thought to be in danger. Mircury,
