Marsh as Administrator of the Colony during the absence of Sir George Bowen, when there were present the Colonial Secretary, Chief Justice Sir George Phillippo, the Attorney General, the Colonial Treasurer, Dr. F. Stewaii, (Registrar General) and Mr. P. Ryrie. After Mr. Marsh had taken the oaths, Mr. Ryrie said that, as the only unofficial member present, be con- sidered it his duty to express the opinion that, the Governor being absent on, business in which the interests of the colony were largely involved, the colony was fortunate in having an officer of such extensive experience to assume the reins of government. He felt assured that every member of the Counell would agree with him in saying that while Sir George Bowen was absent, the affairs of the colony would be perfectly safe in Mr. Marsh's hands. The Administrator thanked the honourable member for his com- plimentary remarks, and adjourned the Council.

Not only have the Chinese brought it to America, but it has through their means spread to Turkesten and Persia, where the culture and use of it are rap. idly extending.
