After this delay, he states, he will consider himself justified in profiting by his strange windfall, which, as he is in poor cir 'cumstances, and about to be married, will be very serviceable to him. On the Place de la Concorde, he relates, he saw the other evening a dark object on the ground,, which he first took to be a sleeping dog. On closer in spection, however, he discovered his mistake, and picked up the garment he now has in his possession. He took the trousers with him on board a boat which he owns, and, on passing them in review, noticed that the buttons scened different to ordinary ones. Prompted by curiosity, he undid the cloth that covered them, and found, instead of wooden moulds, gold picces. Carrying his investigations further, he came across some bank notes, siliched into the waistband, with other papers of value. One peculiarity-be observed was that the knees of the trousers were much 'wom, as though their proprictor was in the habit of kneeling a good deal It is certainly a strange thing for a person to use Napolcons for buttoak and waistband for strong box; and, stranger still, that, doing this, he should lose so precious a pair of trousers on The Place de la Concorde.

MR. LISTER AND THE CHINESE IN HONGKONG.

Mr. Lister is a very well meaning man no doubt, and as a sort of head clerk and general fairly earned his salary. But outside his postal plodder in the post-office he has, I daresay, work he is a dull man, without any particular ability, and with a very narrow mind, full of absurd prejudices. In proof of all this, take the Lister place the Government in possession of very report now under discussion. Did Mr. any information with which it was not al ready acquainted? Did he offer any practical suggestions likely to aid the Government in ar riving at some decision on the questions at issue? He certainly did neither. is strange-Iftrue. I always thought Hongkong originally belonged to China, and that dater became its possessor by
