THIS DAY.

Noon. It gives us much pleasure to be able to report that the April settlements passed off most satisfactorily, not a single ac count, so far as we can learn, having been left unsettled. Of course a great many | speculators were hard hit, but times have been so good lately that the majority of the latest sufferers could well afford to stand a reverse without losing their credit, To-day active business has 'been resumed, and the tone of the market is generally firmer than has been the case for

Some

time. past. Banks have been negociated on the old conditions at 188 per cent. premium for cash and at 190 for the end of the month, leaving off steady at these rates. Hongkong Fires are offered at 1320, a slight reduction on the former quotation. Docks are in much better odour, buyers offering 54 per cent. premium without inducing holders to part with their stock. Doubtless the operations now in progress for raising the Carisbrooke will have some influence on the market position of Docks, and it is probable that the present firmness of, the stock may be attributed to the gêneral belief that these operations will be carried to * suc- cessful issue. Steamboats are also healthier, with a demand for the scrip at 39 per share premium. Business has been put through in China Sugars at 187, and there are further buyers at the rate. Cash sales in Luzons have, heen, reported at 86, but at this price there is still a supply of shares on the market. Other stocks need not be specially referred to

4 o'clock pim. No further business has been transacted since we last wrote, nor are there any changes of importance to report.
