gutturals, a thing of easy attainment. English actors have appeared on foreign stages, but we doubt whether they have ever had the temerity to offer themselves as exponents of the indigen- ous drama. Formerly Mr. Charles Matthews and recently Bliss Kate Munro have appeared successfully in Parision theatres; but they have always simulated in fiction, what they were in reality, the Englishman and the English woman abroad, and spoke French with an English accent which in the case of both probably required no little ability to assume. In "like manner we should imagine that Herr Bandmann, in entertainments of the Schneider, how you vas ?” type, might be, and probably is, unapproachable; and it is partly be- cause Heir Bandmann has not the dramatic ability to overcome the incongruity of his mouth ing Shakespeare with a funny German accent, that an English audience declines to take his extravagant histrionic pretensions seriously.
Repeated disappointments appear to have de trast, the misguided actor a phenomenal irascibility. People in Bombay may remember with what splenetic fierceness he assailed the Bombay Gazette for modestly suggesting that some portions, at least, of his performances might be capable of improvement. Of his shortcomings Bombay, Herr Bandmann seems to have after wards become aware, for in his advertisements in the Calcutta paperi he stated that his six weeks representations in Bombay were "by way of rehearsals for Calcutta." Judging from the failure of bis engagement at the Opera House, however, the company would appear to have profited little by their experience here. Last Saturday night, being the occasion of his last appearance in that theatre, Hery Bandmann, supported by the applause of a foreign gentle man in the stalls, attacked the fickle public who deserted him.
