13 hands 3 inches; it made not the slightest refer- ence to weiglits, therefore as the Stewards do not possess any authority either to alter the old rules, or to make new ones without the sanction of the subscribers to the Race Fund at a properly con vened public meeting, the old scale stands good for the present season. I cannot see any grounds on which a different decision can be arrived at It is quite true that in a copy of the rules attached to the race prograinme circulated last Autumn the 11 lb. clayse was omitted from Rule at; but such omission was unauthorised and quite illegal.
It was no doubt on good grounds that Rule It was framed as it originally stood, and now stands with regard to weight. Three pounds per inch is not, in the opinion of competent racing authorities, a sufficient allowance to bring say a 12.3 and a 13.3 pony together; in fact double that weight is allowed in many countries where pony racing flourishes. It is quite true that many of our best Chinese racers have measured 15 hands and even under; but these are only exceptions to the general rule, The closer the pony approaches the galloway in height, the greater in proportion should be the allowance to his undersized opponents. It re- quires no special racing knowledge for any person of intelligence to satisfy himself that per inch would never bring together on anything equal terms a 13 hands pony and a galloway measuring over 14 hands, assuming that both were of equal quality. It therefore seems to me that the tat lbs. clause for 133 ponies was a most sensibleone. However, be that as it may, that rule is still in force, and cannot be altered except by a resolution to that effect duly passed at a public meeting of subscribers to the fund.

The race course was thrown open for galloping this moming, and was found to be in fairly good order. Owing, however, to a number of the "cracks" being in physic the powing was not especially interesting, and the attendance of spectators was below the average. Mr. Paul's white Derby griffin Sunshine was sent a strong gallop with "Toad" in the saddle, and moved in resolute style. Dauntless went a mile at a fair pace, and appears to be coming to hand nicely, although the suspicious fore leg is always a source of danger. Lord of the Isles only trotted and is also temporarily screwed up."

American mail of the 16th vito., arrived in bar. Hall, this evening, when Bellini's master-piece "Norma" will be produced. The cast is an unchanges usually powerful one, and as the opera is one of the most popular of standard work's, an excellent and enjoyable representation may be looked for: "Norma" was first produced at Milan in 1822, and no greater proof of its musical merits could possibly be forthcoming than the fact that for over sixty years the opera has held a foremost place on the lyric stage. The music is char- acteristic of the composer, but in nearly every essential is superior either to "1-Puritani" or "La Sonaumbula," well known operas by the same great winestro. The argument is also ex- ceedingly interesting, and for the benefit of those who may not be acquainted with the language of Dante, and who have not previously seen the opera performed, we briefly sketch the details of the plot,
After the subjugation of Gaul by the Romans, Pollio, a pro-consul, became attached to Norma, daughter of the arch-druid, who, independent of her rank, was regarded by the people with the incir green cration as the oracle through whom their great god, Irminsul, conveyed his divine decrces to his faithful worshippers Norma has become the mother of two children, and Clotilde alone knows of her faithlessness to her vows. Pollio becomes enamoured of a young priestess of the temple, Adalgisa, who likewise returns the passion of the faithless Roman, and he succeeds in persuading her to fly with him to Rome. Fever and remorse, however, induce her to con- fide in Norman, who is already suffering from neglected affection.
While Adalgisa is relating how she has been tempted, and Norma, in remembrance of her own fate, inquires the name of the culprit, Pollio appears, and finding that he is the traitor, she bursts into incontrollable fury and drives him from their presence.
In the second net we find Norma still under the influence of jealous rage, and resolved to murder her two children. A mother's instinct, however, triumphs, and she calls to Clollide to lead them from her presence. She sends for Adalgisa and begs of her to take charge of them, more to live for,

Inquiries among the agencies of foreign in. surance companies confirm the report of a large conflagration, at Kingston, Jamaica, but it is ever, the damage is believed to be heavy, inas. thought the loss has been exaggerated. How much as large warehouses situated within the boundaries of the burned district contain at this season of the
year heavy stocks of and other merchandise for shipment to the United States and Europe. The fire includes the district from corner of West street and Port Royal street nearly to East street. Both sides of Port Royal street are destroyed, with the wharves to the southward. Most of the buildings destroyed were of stone or brick. The portion of the city devoted to residences was not reached by the flames. The principal losers will undoubt edly be merchants who laid in large stocks of goods for the Christmas season. The theatre recently fitted up was destroyed. The fire must have been extensive, judging from the large orders for lumber pouring in from Kingston at half the amount stated in the early'dispatches, A Kingston steamer is due here on the 24th.

LONDON, December 13th, Lord Derby in a speech at Manchester to-day rejected the idea of a Protectorate for Egypt. England, he said, ought not to remain in Egypt longer than is absolutely necessary to restore order. English influence in Egypt must preponderate, but it is not necessary to exercise it in an offensive spirit, nor exclude free and friendly consultation with France. Referring to the attitude of France toward Madagascar, Lord Derby said: "If amicable mediation Mr. Paul's subscription griffin Opal accompanied as having lost Pollio's love, she has nothing we ought to offer our services, but if, as Messrs. KELLY & WALSH's, where Seats may be.

Wild Dash, Ambassador, Blunder Blas and El Dorado "powed" together a mile and a quarter at a fast pace. Mr. Hutchings rode the former, "Achee Mr. St. Vincent's griffin, "School Blunder Blas, and Mr. Sampson "the veteran's" representative. Blunder Blas got the best of the start and cut out the running at a fast pace about two lengths in front of Wild Dash, the other pair close handy. Approaching the three quarter mile port the lot took closer order, Ambassador racing for the lead. Nearing the Black Rock El Dorado was outpaced, and immediately.com menced to drop astern. A quarter of a mile from home. Blunder Blas was beaten and the bay challenged Wild Dash, the pair even- tually passing the post locked together in 251-the grey going very easily. Scotch Reel, Ghillie Callum and Little Warlock gal loped a mile and a quarter in company, finish. ing well together in 3.03. Gang Forward went a mile by himself at a slow pace, Allegro and Pizzicato in the same stable covering a mile and A quarter and six furlongs respectively at a steady pace. Bothwell and Second Violin galloped a mile in 2.30 and Cutty Sark and Darnley a mile at a very slow pace, the subscription pony being unable to extend the other.
Adalgisa, however, promises to bring Pollio back to her, and leaves her in a more tranquil state. Her happiness is of short duration; Clotilde enters and relates that a Roman has been found concealed in the temple, with the intention of abducting one of the priestesses. He is brought before the council, and on Norma threatening to betray Adalgisa, Pollio pleads for her, and so engages Norma that she gives immediate orders for the funeral pile to be prepared. When the name of the victim is demanded, to the horror of all she publicly denounces herself, and reveals to her father alone that she is a mother. Her love and devotion rekindle Pollio's affection to late, and he gladly mounts the funeral pile with her, after recommending his children to the care of her father.
