PRESENTATION OF PRIZES TO

·THE SCHOLARS OF VICTORIA: SCHOOL.

The distribution of prizes to the scholars of the above school took place on Saturday after- noon, the 20th instant. The Right Revd. Bishop Raimondi occupied the chair, H. E. the Ad- ministrator, the Hon. W. H. Marsh, was unable to be present, but Mrs. Marsh graced the occa sion by her presence and gave away the prizes. The relatives of the scholars mustered in con- siderable numbers and among them we noticed the Hon. F. Stewart, Colonial Secretary, Mr.. Granville Sharp,

Mr. A. G. Romano, &c., &c. After an overture on the piano had been rendered in excellent style by one of the resident scholars, and several recitations given in good form by the more advanced pupils, i his Lordship, Bishop Kaimondi sald:-Ladies and gentle men, before the distribution of prizes takes place permit me to say Hanlon for siting must thank Mr. and Mrs. inviting me to be present on this occasion. There is nothing pleases me more than to be able to take which concerns education. anything part in There is no more noble work than educating the young, though I must confess that it is not an easy task. This school is not a new one; it is well known to all the residents of Hongkong, and has eamed for itself a

HONGKONG SHARE REPORT.

The principal features on our local Stock Exchange during the past fortnight have been the remarkable fluctuations in Banks, and some very extensive transactions in the stock of the China Sugar Refining Company.

When our last report was issued Banks were steady at 184 per cent. cum and 152 ex new issue of scrip. Substantial busi- ness for cash was done at these rates, and also at 186 for the end of the month, 188 for February and 190 for March. A week ago a depression set in, and the quotation quickly fell, A great num- ber of shares changed hands at varying rates from 187 for delivery in February to to 182, and at the cash rate sales were booked, as low as 176; and at 177 for

been bestowed at different times on Mrs. Hanlon's abilities as a teacher, and I am very happy to be here to-day to con- firm them. Mrs. Hanlon's school has been quite a success, which fact is sufficiently proved by the whole of the pupils, with one excep tion, having passed the necessary examinations. Mrs. Hanlon was the first to qualify young ladies to pass in the sixth standard, and she now presents one of her pupils who is ready to sus tain an examination in Latin. Two years ago I was in the United States, where everything is on a grand scale, and I took a particular interest in visiting the different educational establish- ments. In those I saw for the education of young ladies I was shown into a room which was called

the graduated young ladies' class, and that class in every case reflected great credit on their teachers, but I am sure we might find in this room pupils who are equal to those of the gradu- ated young ladies' classes referred to. Mrs. Hanton is a truly Christian woman, a thoroughly good Catholic, and knows how to graft in the juvenile hearts those Christian principles which embellish unul ennobic woman's character so much. The boys of this school likewise reflect great credit on their teacher, Mr. Hanlon, and I hear that during last year no less than 12 boys from this school obtained situations. When you reflect that out of sixty boys, twelve have got situations during the past year you must confess it is a very remarkable result. (Applause), 1 have heard that the managers of the firms whe have employed these boys are well satisfied with them, which is highly gratifying. I should like to have seen some person of higher standing in the position I occupy, but I think there are few who could occupy it who are more acquainted than myself with the hardships and difficulties a teacher meets in his work. heartily congratu late Mr. and Mrs. Hanlon on the great successes they have attained, and on behalf of the com- munity I also heartily thank them for the manner in which they have educated our young, inform you that Mrs. Marsh will distribute the prizes, and I think that coming from her, they will have double value. (Applause).

now

Mrs. Marsh then handed the prizes to the sure- cessful scholars according to the following list

now somewhat better, and after a fair number of transfers at 179 and 180 for cash, the stock remains firm at the latter rate and at 150 x new issue.

Docks have been occasionally dabbled in during the fortnight, but nothing of much importance has to be chronicled,, and the stock closes weak with sellers at 52 per cent, premium.

China Sugar Refining scrip has been extensively dealt in at 200 per share, and at one time there was a slight demand at-203. However, the market is now weaker, with sellers at 197. Chinese Insurances show a further de. preclation being now on the market at 230. China Traders' stock has been nego- ciated at 1600 and 1610, closing firm at the latter quotation.

Bonds of the Chinese Imperial Loan of 1881 have changed hands to an inconsider. able extent at 2) per cent, premium.
