THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1882.

by the on Saturday this famous racer when NELSON'S BATTLE OF THE NILE. out at exercise overpowered his rider, and, alloned nearly three quarters of a mile before being pulled up. It is surmised that in making the tum into the straight the pony must have wrenched his shoulder; at all events he is so lame that he will not be able to appear at ex-a ercise for several weeks, and it is doubtful if he can be got ready in time for the forthcoming races. This alone would have been a serious misfortune to Mr. Kerfoot, but troubles seldom come singly, and in addition to the strapping dun the griffins Filbert, Discount and Arabi Hey have also joined the band of cripples.

There was comparatively little done at the race course this morning. Mr. Hutchings made his first appearance in the saddle and steadily cantered Wild Dashi, Salinanassar, and Amethyst about six furlongs, the first named finishing in resolute style. Nebuchadnezzar galloped at his best pace over the Valley Stakes course: and as it took him 84 seconds to compass the last half mile, he will hardly be dangerous for the subscription griffin races. Mc Tasman's ponies trotted steadily, finishing up with a slow canter the length of the straight, Mr. St. Vicent's bay griffin Ambassador was gal. loped for the first time, and showed to great and vantage. This Derby candidate is a big striding 'animal that evidently possesses the gift of going The teams of Messrs. Gordon and Paul were confined to trotting, as were Mr. Henry's ponies, and several others.

The American string galloped short distances. Astonisher, and the large iron grey and chesnut griffins went together, the first named appearing to have the foot of his companions. Wild Fang, Inverary and Triumph also strode along the length of the straight, the bay going, in remark- ably good form. The two subscription griffins powgd about six furlongs, the spotted one winning -casily-at-the-finish Esperance and El Dorado went half a mile at full speed, the first named winning by about five lengths in 63 2-3th

seconds.

1 hengd a very amusing reason given this morning by a well known "sport" for Wild Fang's splendid performance on the fourth day at the recent Shanghai Meeting, when, ridden by Mr. Hutchings, the big bay easily beat Huntsman, Foxhound and Red Robin over a mile and three quarters in 3.56 The story goes thattheoldmoke was so frightened at the brilliancy of the jockey's Jacket-Mr. Hutchings wore the star-spangled banner of "The Marquis "that he galloped as If the devil were at his heels trying to get away from it. It was a race between. Wild Fang and the American eagle, and the pony wòn.

AŃ OLD SPORTSMAN, Hongkong, e7th December, 1882.

FARMING IN DAKOTA.

"Yes, sir," resumed the Dakota man, as the crowd of agriculturists drew back from the bar and stated themselves around, a little table, "yes, sir, we do things on rather a sizable scale. I've seen a man on one of our big farms start out in the Spring and plów a straight furrow until Fall. Then he tumed round and harvested back."

Carry his grub with him?" asked a Brooklyn farmer, who raises cabbages on the outskirts.

"No, sir. They follow him up with a steam hotel and have relays of men to change plows for him. We have some big farms up there, gentlemen. A friend of mine owned one on which he had to give a mortgage, and I pledge you my word, the mortgage was due on one end before they could get it recorded at the other, You see it was laid off in counties."

There was a murmur of astonishment, and the Dakota man continued:

"I got a letter from a man who lives in my orchard, just before 1.left home, and it had been three weeks getting to the dwelling house, though It travelled day and night.”

"Distances are pretty wide up there, ain't they, inquird a New Utrecht agriculturist.

"Reasonably, reasonably," replied the Dakota man? And the worstofit is, breaks up families so. Two years ago I saw a whole family pro- strated with grief Women yelling, children howling and dogs barking. One of my men had is camp truck packed on seven four-mulo-teams And he was around bidding everybody good-bye." "Where was he going?" asked a Gravesend Man

in the late battle by a great victory over the fleet of the enemy," bears date of August 3rd. It was forwarded overland by Captain Cowe, and received at the Admiralty, Office in London October 2nd, and given to the public in the Times October 3rd, or quite two months after the great victory. Now, by the aid of the telegraph, the news of such a victory would be flashed to the uttermost parts of the earth before the smoke of battle had cleared away or the flow of blood had been stanched in the wounds of the victims. As the dispatches of Nelson have FLORENCE MARIGOLD...........Mrs. BERNARD. passed into history it is not necessary to repro- duce them. Editorially the Times, after re- counting these deuils of the action, says:

"The victory gained by Admiral·Nelson is one of those events which will be less considered with respect to the glory which the British arms derive from it thas as it relates to foreign politics, and giving confidence to those who are on the point of entering on a new war with the French' Republic. Already we know that a considerable army of Russia is approaching the Austrian territories to give confidence to the,we fear, yet undecided politics of the Emperor of Genbany; a Russian ficct is arrived at Constantinople, on its passage to the Mediterranean through the Dardanelles, and the Grand Selgnor, from the decision and vigor which guide his councils, and A: hasten his prepamtions by land and sea, seeme anxious to emulate his rival in laudable exer- tion.”

In fact, all Europe was getting ready for that tremendous struggle, which convulsed the civ ilized world, upset thrones and made wrecks of nations, and was only ended by the irretrievable defeat of the French Emperor on the field of Waterlog.

In the same paper that conveys the great news from Egypt the editor summarizes the news from Ireland, which took from the 28th of September to. the 2nd of October to reach London from Dublin, in this sententious manner;

Yesterday a mail arrived from Ireland, and in WINE MERCHANT AND GENERAL contradiction to the discredit that was attempted to be given in the Opposition papers to the news of the defeat of the rebels in the North of Ireland, we have the pleasure to assert in to-day's paper the bulletin published at Dublin Castle respecting that affair. It appears that the few French officers who were left at Killale to organize the raw Irish recruits found them so savage and un- tutored that they had lost all their credit and influence with them, and at length were obliged to have recourse to self-defence to protect them- cives. We have the pleasure to add that by the process of General Trench's operations, a de laive blow has been given to every root and fibre of rebellion in that quarter of the Kingdom." ➡Cincinnati Commercial.
