THE inaugurative concert of the Temperance Hall's musical season will be given at the Hall, Queen's Road East, to-night, commencing at balf-past eight o'clock. His Excellency the Ad- -ministrator will preside, and an attractive pro- gramme, which we published in our issue of last Wednesday, will be performed. It is to be hoped that the weather will keep fine, and that a large audience will assemble. The charge for admis- sion, for civilians, is so cents..

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER

CANTON.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT]

November 23rd. Yesterday afternoon at the English, Yamên, the Foreign Community of Canton, and a few visitors from your port were right reyally entertained by H.B.M. Consul, Mr. A. R. Hewlett, under whose patronage and the Committee of gentlemen named below, were hekl the English Yamên Athletic Sports. The park was tastefully de-- corated with bunting, the course being marked, A HAWKER was committed for trial at the Su-

out with Tartar flags, while from the flagstaff of preme Court this morning by Captain Thomseti, the Pavilion (a new and handsome structure in ́for attempting to corrupt the incorruptible integ-Chinese style) floated the Union Jack of old

rity of a Chinese constable by giving him 23 cents as a bribe. Asked by the lukong why he

The fields were smaller than in previous years, gave him the money, the hawker replied, "Some but the capital racing, notably in the Hurdle people are gambling below there." Scarning to Race, made up in quality what was wanting in betray his trust for a feeble 23 cents, the consta-quantity. The following are the results of the day's ble lugged the peripatetic off to the station, though it appears he did not go in search of the gamblers. This is the first case of the kind we remember to have seen committed for trial. Bribery, like gambling, being inuate in the Celestial character, is intradicable by any re- pressive measures, we fancy.

A BURGLAR KILLLD BY À FALL WHILE ON THE WAR-PATH.

A burglar, while actively engaged in the pur suit of his nefarious calling carly this morning, was overtaken by the black camel which, as the Arabian proverb says, kneels before every man's gate. About 3.30 a...the fall of a heavy body in the street attracted the attention of some of the occupants of No. 5 Police Station, in Queen's Road, who, upon going to the verandah, saw a Chinaman lying on his back on the other side of the road. The man was quite dend, the side channel containing a considerable quantity of blood, which had flowed into it from cuts in the dead man's head and left armi. · Quite an imposing burglarizing equipage was found on the deceased's person, comprising skeleton keys, chisels, awls, gimletz, a hammer, slow-matches,&c. The man, it appears, by the aid of skeleton keys, had effected an entry, by a trap-door in the back- part of the roof, into No. 183, Queen's Road Central, two floors westward of the house, No. 179; oppo. site where the body was found. He had stolen four brass Chinese smoking pipes from the ground floor, of No. 183, which were found in a bag hanging over the top verandah of No. 181. After stealing the pipes from No. 183, deceased 'would. seem to have gone, by the ledge, from the upper verandah to the ledge of the verandah of No. 181, and, when attempting to reach the ledge of the verandah of the next house, No. 179, missed his hold and fell backward into the sircet, a height of some 30 feet; being killed instantly. The marks of the deceased's heels are plainly visible on the ledge of No. 179, and in his desperate efforts to save himself, he would ◆ppear to have grasped one of the flower pots on the rail of the verandah, carrying it with

him in his fatal descent to the street below, where it was found smashed to pieces. His object, apparently, was to reach No. 177, an unoccupied house next to the one he fell from, whence he could have easily emerged into Queen's Road when no constables were about, Death, however, overtook him in the midst of his villainy, and for ever, put an end to his ** annex- ing" raids. The body, which was found by Act- ing Inspector of Nuisances Grimble, and is that

of a man aged about, 30, was sent to the Civil

England.

this afternoon. The houses along which the burglar semmbled, as well as the one he stole A the pipes from, are occupied by Chinese, two of them beingnative shoe shops on the ground floors, Close to where the pipes were stolen from there was a small safe containing a lot of dollars, which would seera to have escaped the burglar's ab- servation, but it is very likely that some noise in the house alarmed him and caused him to decamp before he had finished the business he came upon. The body has since been identified __ni_that_of_a_man nanied U Atong, well known to the police, and who was deported some six years ago for burglary..

Paris, Nov. 4, 1878. "I have attentively examined the beautiful i pianos of Messrs. John Brinsmead and Sons that are exhibited at the Paris International Exhibi- tion of 1878. I consider them to be exceptional in the case with which gradations of sound can be produced, from the softest to the most power ful tones. These excellent pianos merit the ap: probation of all artists, as the tone is full as well as sustained, and the touch is of perfect evenness throughout its entire range, answering to every requirement of the pianist.”

"I have pleasure in expressing my opinion that the Paris Exhibition Model Grand Piano- fortes of Messrs. John Brinsmead and Sons are unsurpassed. "The principle of the Brinsmead firm is to give the best piano of its kind, the best of materials, the best of care, the best of taste, and the best of finish; and this is why the manufactory in Kentish Town sends down to Wigmore Street so many pianos perfect in scale, sustained in lone, elastic in bulk, with equal and responsive touch, and, in fact, as near as possible to that ideal that all musicians must require-a thing of beauty1 that is, 'a joy for ever,”!
