It was found that the rect extended nearly a mile in a N.W. and S.E. direction with breadth of 4 cables, the soundings decreased rapidly from 20 to 17, 8 and 5 fathoms, the latter being within 20 yards of the ridge of the reef; the bottem, con sisting of coral boulders, interspersed with white coral sand, was distinctly visible in 10 to 12 fathoms, along the ridge of the reef, the lead fal ling on the boulders gave 12ft, falling off into 15 feet.
