Without wishing to show any disrespect either to the King of Portugal or the Governor of Macao, we cannot help thinking with Maccense that such an unnecessary and lavish expenditure was not justified by the far from satisfactory state of the public funds. If the Macao government has any surplus coin to spare, it would be much better applied to the urgently needed improvements of the colony, and in rescuing a miserable community from a position of degradation, than in foolish festivities of the
