hunt. I also ventured to record my impression that Mr. Bidwell, who rode the winner, wore an ordinary tweed walking suit Mr. Faltoffer now. tells "I.C.U.," and "I.C.U." at once enlightens the public with the startling information that we appear in Boats and Breeches during the race days proper; and would not be allowed to ride otherwise by the Stewards," Mr. Fairoffer Further says "At any rate, matter of form, I should not appear in other costume, apart from the comfort and utility of the dress." Now it so happens that never stated, or intended to state that Mr. Bid well appeared in other than the orthodox riding costume on the race days proper. My impres sion, a most vivid and distinct one, seeing that this steeplechase was the only one I ever had the pleasure of witnessing in Shanghai, was that it was run on the fourth day of the meeting. I have also a distinct remembrance that the pony on which Mr. Bidwell went in for a spell of skylarking was a very handsome aninial named Earl Öswy; with which, by the "way, the great horseman did wonderful work. However, presuming that I was mistaken about the tweed suit, how could that effect the accuracy of my assertion that Black Cloud won the Grand National on that, decasion hands down? It is simply a childish quibble worthy of such a "sport" as 1. C. U. "As 1 heard Mr. Ogle, ex plain to the owner of Spalpeen, that, his mount was done with before completing the first round the Keechong horseman's exact words were this fellow was sobbing before we got once roundI don't think paltry quibbling will affect my former statements.

Fairoffer is evidently the guide, philosopher, and friend of "I.C.U." He actually goes the extreme length of predicting that "1.C.U.-who is a jockey, and such a jockey-musi and will distinguish himself in the saddle rukenthe oppor. fanity occurs. I shall wait with grim.expectancy for that time and opportunity to arrive. In the meantime I would commend to the attention of this distinguished and at the same time modest

first animadverts on the outbreak of the mutiny" and the steps that were taken by the Chinese Governsent to restore order. It then goes on to speak of the thankfulness of the Corean King for the assistance and protection he received from China, and the Peking Government appreciates and reciprocates the friendliness of his sentiments.. The King is sorely distressed in mind at the de- tention of his father, and he implores that the favour may be granted him to return to his own country. In answer in this request, the decree states: "We regard Li Kwen-ying's crime of treason to the King and treachery to his country as an offence that cannot be pardoned, and Li Kwen-ying himself is unable to make any excuse for the crimes that he has committed. We have, however, already extended to him a special nct of grace and treated him very leniently, by ordering his residence at a particular place (Pao ting-fo) with instructions that he be treated with consideration and provided with a regular allow. ance. The leniency already extended to Li Kwen.ying is the extreme to which we can go. The King of Corea, actuated by filial piety, and tile distress of mind caused by the absence of his father, in his memorial to the Board of ↑OTICE is hereby given, that D. JOAQUIM EN BARRERA LAY JAP CHOY LIN Ceremonies, points out that his father

is aged and in ball health, and solicits the Board to SENG, LUM GEOK THOR, LUM HUM LUI, appeal to the Throne on his behalf. But Li Kwen-ying has committed Trading as MERCHANTS, at No. 60, Bonham such grievous offences against his country that Strand. Our leniency towards him is extrausted, and his son, holding still the reins of Government, must be careful to ascertain the wishes of the majority of his people and not act on the advice of any particular man. Under the circumstances we cannot take into consideration the King's application on behalf of Li Kwen-ying, but We will allow a deputy from the King to visit Li Kwen-ying yearly to pay him due and proper respect. This, We think, will satisfy the wishes of the King, and hereafter We shall take no notice of any application he may make for, leave to be granted to Li Kwen-ying to return to his own

I am also glad to find that "1.C.U." "Sporting Notes" are read with great interest by Mr. Fairoffer. It is satisfactory to know that, because they are written without prejudice and are therefore to be relied on "; they interest some- body, and prove a guide to what is going on in the "Ascot of the East." Craes ignorance is not, usually considered a reliable guide; however, a good deal of allowance must be made for the in- dividual who, in cold blood, can see any re- semblance between Hongkong races and those of Royal Ascot

My comments on what "LCU. has written about the half dozen griffins must be brief The joke he indulges in is a sign of modesty for which, I must confess, I did not give him credit; but he need not have so ingenously hidden his identity under the name of "Robinson. His mistaking the C. C's hack for one of the subscription racers was really excusable in one who has such slender pretensions to "horsey knowledge. However, there was no necessity for drawing on his imagination for such qualifications as "bobbery very good looking lot" &c., The penies were as quiet as sheep, and are as coin. mon looking a lot as I ever cast eyes on. I have an old hack in my stable that has never won a race, and is never likely to win one, that I shall be glad to match against either one of the six grilling, over any distance, for any reasonable Bun, on the fourth day of the races:-and if 1. C. U will ride the griffin 1 will con cede 5ths. 1. C. U's. Shanghai corros pondents are evidently a bright lat, especially talented gentleman who referred to the griffins in the following elegant and correct style: Says he ""They are the bobberiest lot of ponies that ever I did see one of them has bucked off all the riding buys, and altogether I think you Hongkong jocks will have a pretty bad time of it breaking them in." The above extract is al- most as chaste as "I, C. U.'s" advice to trainers of race ponies. He says "Put them on low chow-chow, and give them plenty of walking exer- cise. That will be better than galloping all the stuffing out of them, or putting theri at once, on five pound feeds and not giving them enough exercise to prevent internal fattening." Why docs this experienced and refined young man not write a book on Training and Riding?" it seems a pity that so much elegant writing, and such a vast amount of crudition and racing knowledge should be wasted on the unappreciative Hong kong public. And yet neglect frequently is the fate

of Ceremonies with the direction that it is to be respected and obeyed.— Shanghal Courier.

especially for the wheat-carrying trade between this port and European ports. There will be two classes of ships competing for this trade- steam power sufficient to drive the ship five or one with auxiliary steam, a full-rigged ship with

knots an hour; the other, the full-powered ship, built something after the manner of the steam colliers which, have already found their way to this part. Both classes of vessels will be adapted to transportation business by way of a ship canal across the Isthmus. In fact, the prospect that such a canal may be completed at an early-day has already an apparent in- fluence in the sharing of future vessels adapted to the wheat trade.

Thic full-powered freight steamer makes hardly

small and

more than ten knots an hour, and does not depend canvas. The auxiliary steamship is a perfect very mucfr upon sails, although well supplied with sailing vessel, the half clipper, with sharp ends and flat floors, a large carrier with compact engine to work through all the calms and to insure a good day's reckoning when sails are of little use. The American idea at present, is the auxiliary steamship. There is nothing a practical demonstration. The new steam

will carry more dead weight than their Custom House tonnage. They can be driven under steam from six to seven knots an hour. They are fast under canvas and fast enough under steam for all the re- quirements. The one large ship with auxiliary power, now building, is probably not the only one which has been planned, but happens to be the first one of which we have such definite know- ledge as to warrant any particular statement. The power of the ausiliary steamship can be in- creased to any desirable extent. But the Am- erican idea is not to-day the full-powered steam- ship. Wind is always cheaper than steam for long distances. And when a vessel is making two hundred miles a day under canvas there will be little occasion for steam. However, one more revolution in steam as radical as that which at- tended the introduction of the compound steam engine, would make steam so cheap for occan service that even sails would become obsolete.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT DECREE. in the settlement of the Corean question the Chinese Government acted with promptness and determination, and whatever may have been the opinion previously held, it is now on record, in the form of an Imperial decree, that, Corea is a dependency of China, or, to quote the words of the decree itself, China and Corea are of the same family, sharing alike joy and sorrow together. The position taken by China is the one we have asserted she had a right to assume

While she assumed this attitude towards Japan, she was not backward to take steps to punish those who had instigated the recent mutiny, and with this object in view she has exiled Li Kwen-ying THERMOME the King's father, and the ringleader of the rebellion, to Pao-ting-fu. The Imperial decree of the 23rd instant, which we published in our columna on the 27th, was peculiarly outspoken with regard to Corea being a dependency of China, and it also stipulated in no unwavering terma that Li Kwen-ying had been guilty of treason, and that he deserved severe and most ached.0.0 26.0 84.0 10.0 78.0 77.678
