THE STRIKE OF COOLIES.
Notwithstanding the admonitions of the District Magistrate at the Mised Cimun yesterday, and the bond entered inte, neither the coolies of the Sangini Cargo Hoat Company nor those of the Yang tye Company have returned to their work. It is generally believed that the restaurant keeper on the French Concession, who was charged at the French Mised Count with inciting the coolics to strike in the first instance, but the Shanghai Cargo Boat Company could not prove the charge against him, is the instigator of the while trouble. It is rumoured that he is supplying the coolies on strike with food and advises the steps that they should take. To supply six or 5-ven hundred coulies with chow-chow for ene

We have not been able to get the exact details of the scheme, but the profits to the promoter, we hear, are estimated at $170 per muath, which is a much larger squeeze than the headman and towdahs of the Cargo Bont Companies could possibly make, taking the repies sentations of the coolies themselves to be true. This man, we are informed, has instructed the coolies to return to work on one of two conditions being conceded them-that the headman of the Shanghai Carge Boat Company be dismissed, or increase of assignent, they are given an of wages of $2 per month. According the lowdahs of the boats, who are all perfectly well satisfied with their positions, the reason why the coolics wish to have the headman dismissed is that formerly they had facilities, as our readers well know from cases heard in the Mixed Court, of pilfering cargo, but the pre- cautions he has taken, and his strict manage ment generally, have reduced their opportuni- tics of thieving to a minimum. Under these circumstances the Company regard hum as a valuable employé, and we shall be surprised if their wishes, so far as he is concerned, are com- plied with, as it is not at all improbable that if he were dismissed one of their own supporters in the present strike might be appointed to his posi tion, no matter how careful the Company might be to avert such a contingency. Nor do we think it likely that the Company will comply with their request for an advance of wages. If even the nature of their employment and the hours they have to work were such as to merit a serious consideration of the matter, it is our opinion that it would be an injurious precedent for employers of Chinese labours
they gave way at this particular jancture. Let the coalies return to work, and when the excitement of the strike has subsided, and they have, to quote the District le's words,, "confessed their sins," the can then, in a voluntary manner, and with good grace, make the concession now asked for.
To yield the point at this crisis of affairs would have a dangerous tendency to create dis- content among the many other different classes
of coolies employed in the Settleinent, and the result, in all probability, would be a series of ob- jectionable conflicts between masters and men. At all event, before a concession of the kind is made, it is worthy of the gravest consideration of those interested.
