A CURIOUS return has been published by the Government Statist of Victoria, showing, in con- nection with the recent census, the birthplaces of all the people of the colony. From this it up pears that of the 862,346 people who comprised the whole population, 499, 199 were born in the cold itself, 147,453 in. England and Wales, 48.153 in Scotland, and 86,733 in Ireland. Of persons born in the Australasian Colonies other than Victoria, 11,876 came from Tastaania, 9,928 from South Australia, 9,826 from New South Wales, and 6,000 or 7,000 from all the other colonies together. All other British possessions claim between them 7,148, of whom 1,118 were Canadian born, 998 East Indians, 1,877 born at sca, and 4.707 vaguely described as "British" Of foreigners the greatest number are Chinese- viz, 11,799; Germans come next with 8,571; Americans third, with 2,343: Swedes and Nor. wegians fourth, with 1,375; French titts, with 1,334; Swiss sixth, with 1,314; Danes aseventh, with 1,039; and Italians, just under the thousand, with 947. No other country claims to be the birthplace of so many as 400. Summarising the whole, it appears that out of the 862.346 souls in the colony, only 30.783, or 1 in 25, are aliens by birth. The colony thus proves itself essentially "British" in every sense, notwithstanding the outery against the risk the colony rau of being swamped by foreigners. If we deduct from the above calculation the Chinese, who only visit the colony to "make their pile," and do not permas nently settle there, the proportion of foreigners to British subjects by birth is reduced to about | in 45. These figures largely explain the recent out- cry against Chinese immigration into the colony.

THOMAS IDE BOWLER.
To the Entrox or roi. "Hongkasa Tetrorapa," SIR,My attention having been called to a paragraph in the Hongkong Telegraph of the 3rd inst., in which it is stated that Mr. Thomas Ide Bowler, after the Chief Justice had postponed the action in which I sued Bowler for $552, had heen pressing me very urgently to withdraw the suminons against him; that I declined to be humbugged by him that he retaliated by saying he would not pay the debt as promised; and that he said he would feign sickness on the day the trial was set for, so that the Chief Justice would be compelled to give him time to settle. I consider it only fair to state that all these statements are trie in substance and in fact, and that they were personally communicated by me to the Editor of the Telegraph.

SIR,-Whatever my knowledge of the Fort guese language may be, I am bound to say that your correspondent "Um Macaense " who writes in your issue of 6th inst, knows nothing whatever of English language, or he would not have so grosly misrepresented what I wrote, on the 5th instant. I never said maleriado was "nut atall insulting," but I said the expressing was not, by way of pre-eminence, "very insulting," which is quite a different thing Um Macaense" has cutirely misapprehended the drift of my let ter, and evidently should apply to some one com petent to teach him a little English, before he attempts to reply to anything in that language, of which he knows as little as a donkey does of astronomy. I still adhere to what I wrote on the 5th about maleriado.

"Oh, you mean Atalanta, du you, instead of thoughtless of me to make such a mistake, 1 suppose you know all about Attie, and the big steeplechase she was in ?"
"Well," said the poet, in a hesitating manner, of course I am familiar with the classics, but it has never come under my observation that Ala- lanta was ever the heroine of any such an episode as to the one you allude."
Didn't know she was on the urfand won the liveliest race ever run in Arcadia ?"
"No, sir, I did not," replied the poet "Then you are not so fly as I took you to be,” said the horse reporter, and I will give a few pointers on Grecian history, and sweep away with the dimpled hand of knowledge the cobwebs of ignorance that obscure the horizon of your power ful mind. TEA MUSTERS.
Persons who send Musters of Tea through the. Post in Tinu are requested to have them made flat or square instead of round, as it is impossible to pack round tins securely in the mail bags. It is believed that the tea will travel more safely in flat tins, which are not so liable as round ones to be bulged in. 4 by 3 by 18 inches is suggested as a good size. The tins should not have sharp comers."
