Minister left for Peking a week ago, the p.m. yesterday, and docked at 5 am. this day, making the passage in 2 days and 11 hours from Woosing The hackers of 30 days or less" were jubilant, and a nautical expert who has persistently argued and wagered that the steamer, deeply faden as she was, should be more than 30 clays in making the passage, was freely chaffet, until he pointed out that there was a slight mis take of a day in the calculation. We issued an extra, giving the news as received, and the times the acquaintance of the Corean officials and has of passage from Woosung, and the Lightship, 1

As the distance from the East end of the Isle of Wight to Gravesend is about 160 nautical miles, it is probable that the Stirling Chaffe did not amrive there on the erst, as she could not enter the Thames at night running at the rate of 17 knots per hour. The time as given, however, shows that she has made a very rapil passage from Port Said, and considering that she was deeply laden, and had been under steam for more than thirty days--her performance is won- derful and will compare favorably with the Alaska's best.

As opinions are at variance as to whether difference of time should be taken into calcula tion in estimating the lengths of passage from Shanghai to London, we are informed that the nautical men almost invariably allow for it, and the passage from New York to Queenstown and vice versa as published, are so calculated. A day is but twenty-fours, and a steamer leaving Woosung at noon on the 1st of June, and arriving in London at noon on the si. of July, though nominally 30 days on the way, as in reality been 728 hours and 6 minutes in making the passage. To further exemplify the case, suppose two steamers starting from the same point on the equator parted at noon, and going, one east, the other west, at the rate of 15 knots per hour. On the following day at noon, one would have run 24 hours 24 minutes, equal to 366 knots, and

JOURNALISTIC ENTERPRISE.

A rumour reaches us, on no particular autho- rity, that our enterprising morning contemporary is making arrangements by which it will be enabled to furnish its readers with "full and verbatim reports" of proceedings in the Judicial Courts as early as forty-eight hours after the sittings. Whilst congratulating our contem- porary upon its vigour we must be permitted to doub: whether such expedition can be carried out without entailing considerable wear and tear to the reportorial staff. However, the object in view--that of supplying an indulgent Cosmo- politan Community with news not later than a couple of days after the event-is most praise. worthy and deserves success, even at the expen- diture of a stenographer or two. In order to keep pace with our fightning contemporary we are also making arrangements by which the rising generation of Shanghai may learn, when Bey arrive at maturity, such news as we have denied their parents. Our scheme will embrace the following journalistic novelties →→
