We learn from Pagoda that a storm raged with soene viulence on Friday afternoon last nad when at its zenith at three o'clock, a large passenger boat was capsized immediately below the Pago- da. No lives are supposed to have been sacri Beed by the catastrophie but as an ordinary Chimanian's life is sa fatle regarded amongst the patives and the boat in question was rather heavily burdened with passengers, it is highly probable that some are minus although not re- corded as missing.

The boat was taken in tow by the Customs Steam launch, and delivered up to the Amborities,

Gladstone aninounced to-morrów he would move the Repression bill have precedence over all other business until its consideration is concluded. If he finds it necessary he will afterward ask prece dence for the Arrears of Rent bill

Parnell gave notice he would move Gladstone's resolution in regard to the Repression bill shall also apply to the Arrears bill.

Gladstone then moved the second reading of the Arrears bill.

The House was very crowded when he made his motion. Gladstone said it was impossible to compel the people to borrow, therefore the money supplied by the Government must be a gift. He stated there are 585,000 tenants in Ireland paying under thiny per cent rent, Griffith's valuation, and of these 200,000 were excluded from the benefits of the Land Act by being in arreaus. This, He said, must be amended. He admitted the pre- posal was extraordinary, but so was the state of Ireland.

Sclater-Booth (Conservative, moved an amend ment, declaring it inexpedient in charge the Con solidated Fund' with any prepayment for arrears except in the form of a loan. He described the Geverament's plan as commistic and demoral iring. It was an evil precedent, and imust objec Lonable in view of Scotch and English farmers, who suffered as much as the Irish fanners.

Forster testified to the general leniency of the landlords of Ireland, though there were individual Ce(hardship. He said it would be of inter- est odlords to reduce the number of tenants. If for tenants got a fair start they would become fewer and better of, and wretchedness would no longer furnish an excuse for agitation. He he lieved

Gladstone said, in view of the apposition, he saw it was hopeless to proceed, and, announced be would take up this bill on the morning of Tuesday instead of the Repression bill.

Adjournment of the debate was then agreed to In the House of Lords the Marquis of Wexford gave notice of and postponed his question in re- lation to the Kilmainhain compact.

Earl Granville prostested against such notice, as the lower Bouse had ruled a similar one out of urder. The adjournment of the House to June 1st was then agreed to.

At a meeting of the fish Parliamentary Party to-day, Parnell presiding, the Secretary was directed to telegraph all absentees to attend the sussions of the Itouse to oppose the Repression bil Parnell, Sexton, Healy, Leahy and Dillon were appointed a Committee to draft amend. ments to the bill. This signifies strenuous re- sistance on the part of the Irish members.

Proverbial as it is that during the month of November more suickles arvur in England than in the rest of the montles put together, so verily has the month of June the same apparently de- pressive effect upon a Celestials intellect in this month last year we heard of numerous acts of self destruction, and during the past week, no less than three clear cases of jelo de vechiave come under our notice, twa of which were comin- itted without any apparent motive, whilst the third one was of the most determined and deli- herate character. On Saturday evening last, shortly after six o'clock, the hither of Messrs. Russell & Co.'s Compradore was found with a knife, in either hand, endeavouring to decapitate himselfly drawing them simultaneously round bis neck. The unfortunate man vas at once seized and disarmed, but with a maniac's strength, he freed himself from the grasp of his would be preservers, and, with both bands, tore his throat completely open, causing death to ensser in the course of a very few seconds. It appears that the deceased has for some time suffered from a diseased therax, which native doctors have been unable to enre, and 11: contemplation of ever having to remain a sufferer, seems to have presed upon his mind. The Chinese, who'we have in- terrogated upon the subject, advance the theory that the seat of the brain is in die Stomach, and that the deased was deranged suficiently as to render him on compos mates. The generality of the medical faculty ascribe all diseases of the brain to stomachic disorders, erg, if the Chinese could but he persuaded that the head really con- tains the small portion of brain allotted to man- kind, we might easily agree upon the other and minor points at issud-erald.

THE ANNAMESE TROUBLES.

DEPARTURE OF CHINESE WAR-VESSELS FOR HAIPHONG

According to our latest advices from Canton, here seems every reason to believe that serious troubles are impending in connection with the re- cent proceedings of the French in Annam. It has been an open secret for some considerable time past that the Chloese Government have expressed their disapproval, in most decided terms, of the action of the French troops in Hanoi, and it has even been hinted that the Chinese would take the field in defence of her tributary if the soldiers of the republic attempted anything in the shape of annexation. However, be that as it may, it is quite certain that is Excellency the Viceroy of Canton has despatched, by order of the Imperial Government at Peking, a fleet of Chinese war-vessels to Haiphong to watch proceedings. These vessels, seven in number, fully armed and equipped, and bearing, in addition to their ordinary complement of men, a large number of soldiers, left Canton yesterday. That this threatening act of the Viceroy will arouse the French to a sense of the danger of their position can hardly be doubted, and it is

moured that the Saigon authorities have already received information of the new aspect of affairs, and have been requested to despatch all the available forces at their disposal, to protect French interests in Haiphong. Whatever may eventually result from these proceedings, there can be no doubt that there exists grave cause for alarm.

As a two year old Bruce ran four times, winning easily an each occasion, and retiring for the winter with an unbeaten certificate, a hot favorite for the Derby. The future winner of the Grand Prix made his debut at the Ascot meeting of last year in the Windsor Castle Stakes of Loo, which, starting at the og odds of 100 to 8, he won easily by a neck, from Haverhill, Clodoche, and seven others. Next pulled out for the King John Stakes of £440, at Egham, Bruce landed with great ease, although only by half a length, from Red Spectre, Resin the Bow, Victory 11, Aran Don, First Flight, and
