side of a hill and work inwards, so that in some parts a regular tunnel is found through a hill.
Next come the mines from Shun Ti-fea to the border of Homas and Shantung provinces, which possess lead ore. Specimens of the native lead were gi Jast October to Captain. Mignard, of the Chines Imperial Navy, and on analyzing it he was surprised at its richness. Copper, clay for making the finest porcelain, iron and coal are also found. The subjoined report by Jolin Percy, M.D., F.R.S, of the Royal School of fines, rey London, as given to Mr. James Henderson, is a authority on the value of the iron and coal found at the ciliage of Pray clans, in da Ming foo, about twenty tiles from the river, which afterwards falls into the Grand Canal; and the cral is therefore of easy conveyance to Tientsin for shipment to other ports.
If Mr. Tong-king-sing, when his attention was drawn to the Pung chung nines in 1877, had in. vested half of what he has spent at Kaiping, he no doubt would, two years ago, have been in possession of coals which are equal to Australian coals. He would also have had better iron; for at Pung chung the coal and iron are in close proximity, within a stone's throw of each olker; whereas at Kaiping the iron is gomiles from the coal mines, ami to bring it down, even by tail, will entail a perpetual and heavy expense.
The range of hills which encircles the foreign settlement of Cheloo is rich in iren ore, namely magnetic and rownore. Specimens were given last year to Mr. T. T. Fergusson and to Chinese, and these have now been analyzed, showing very favourable results. A Chinese company has now been formed to work these mines, and the writer has been requested to aid this com pany. Therefore, if Mr. Tong-king-sing had sent Mr. Burnett to Chefoo, instead of sending him back again to the Yangtzekiang, where in 1876 he lunged in vain, it would perhaps have been better, and more to the advantage of this mining company. As the Chinese Government, and those who are interested in the mineral wealth of China, are now inore fully acquainted with the natural treasures of these provinces, it is to be hoped that they will make better use of their knowledge than they did in 1875.-Mercury | Correspondent,
JAPAN.
The Cheyn Shimbun says that, as was pre- viously reported, General Oyama, Minister of War, will shurtly be appointed Minister at Paris, and that Mr. Terashina, I'resident of the Senate, has tendered his resignation, but that whether this will be accepted or rejected by the Govern ment is still unknown.
It is stated that, possibly in connection with the recent disturbance in Corea, many cipher telegrams have been received by the Eastern Admiralty office at Yokohama from the Japanese man-of-war now in Corean waters, and that Ad- miral Nirei, chief of the said office, holds con- tinuous conferences with the Minister of the Navy.
According to the Mainichi Shimbun, the Naval Department has determined to despatch fwo men-of-war promptly to Korea.
It is said that a small dock is likely to he Constructed shortly near Benten, Yokohama,
The Mainichi Shimbun says that a certain dignitary, who has frequently held his hand out to the commercial community and has been much talked about with reference to money matters, purchased about one million yen i specie in January. in compliance with the per. suasion of his bankers and some of the principal merchants of Tokiyo, and that, owing to the recent fall in the value of silver, he is very anxious
the result of the speculation.
Se Vokohama public will be pleased to learn that owing to a successful canvass made for subscriptions. the services of the Japanese Naval Hand have been engaged to give a series of some twenty promenande concerts, some in the Bluff Gartens, and some on the Cricket Ground dur. ng the approaching summer months. The first concert will take place in June. We can but congratulate the gentlemen who so kindly took the matter in hand upon the success that has attended their efforts.
At the auction held on Tuesday afternoon at Bie Imperial Russian Consulate the two Russian schooners & Elizabeth and North Star were sold for the sum of $3,600 and $1,100 respectively. The purchaser in both cases was Mr. F. C. Spooner.
lis Excellency Sasaki, Minister of the Public Works Department, gave a farewell lunch in the Yenriokwan on the 3rd instant to Mr. Dyet, Principal of the Engineering College, who returns home about the end of June to assume the duties of the important post to which he has been ap pointed in London. Among the guests were all the foreign employés, and the principal officialy of the Kobuslf. The reason why this compliment was paid to Mr. Dyer now instead of, as is cus- tomary, on the eve of his departure, was that the Minister desired to be present on the occasion, and is about to leave Tokiyo at an early date.
The Flochi Shimbun's Fusan correspondent publishes the following letter, lately sent by Talin Kun, leader of the Corean anti-progressionists, to Li Hung Chang, Viceroy of Pechili, China:
"The commercial intercourse of our country with Japan is due to nothing else but your in structions. But now I learn from a report made to the King by Gio Inchie" (who visited Japan last year and lately returned to Corea via Shang- bai) "that the Japanese Emperor does not desire to be aggressive himself; but that within a few months representatives of more than ten Western nations will come here one after another. Docs not this look like a united menace? Since bome Frenchmen secretly entered the cemetery at Tokuzan and desecrated it some years ago, they have become enenics so bitter that we cannot live with them under the same sky, and so we must not hypocritically pretend any friendship for them. The only thing which we fear is that Japanese residing in our country and attracting to them.
