Chinese Court Circular.-Winter clothes will from to-day, May 4th, be exchanged for the lighter Summer garments.

We notice that numerous pigs have lately been prowling about the roads on the island of Ku- lango, rooting them up extensively, destroying the newly-planted trees, boundary walls and actually undermining the graves and monuments in the Foreign Cemetery. We hope that the Road Committee will take measures to

prevent the pigs from destroying the rats entirely.

The Rev. G. Burno after a long residence at this part, left here for Hongkong on May 1st in the steamer Atang ung to assume the manage ment of the Spanish Procuration there. During the many years he has been associated with us, he was held in very high estimation for his zeal, fidelity and patience in teaching the Christian doctrine.

The Revenue Cruiser Fri Hoo left yesterday evening, the 2nd inst, for, Fisher Island and Formosa,

The French frigate La Victorieuse, Captain de la Batle, with i. E. Admiral Meyer on board," and the French gun-boat Lutin, Commander Rouvier, left this morning, the 3rd instant, for Shanghai.

At the British Consular Court on May 2nd, Francis G. Nelson, Boatswain of the British brig| rges, was brought before the Consul at the instance of the Master charged that on the night of the 1st of May, the said Francis . Nelson, whilst partially drink, did strike and want to fight with the sailors, attempt to strike the Master with a kaife, and generally with behaving in a violent, disorderly and dangerous manner. After hearing the evidence of the mate and one of the sailors in support of the Master's statement, the Consul sentenced the accused to six weeks' im. prisonment with hard labour-Gazette.

We hear that the British Naval Yard property was sold by private bargain on Saturday, for Th. 55.00, le purchaser being Mr. S. Daly. It is rather a remarkable coincidence that on Saturday we had a paragraph contradicting a report in a home paper, which said it had been sold in Feb tuary last for £23,000.

Mr. Guy, the mate of the late urig Mary, arrived to-day, May 1st, fron Chefoo. He was shipwrecked

last year in that vessel at Queipart,

off the Coast of Corea, the captain and wife were drowned, and 18 Chinese seamen. Mr. Guy, and 16 of the crew, remained in Corea for eight months and suffered great privations. At last they met with a Chefoo fishing boat, by which they all returned to Chefoo:

We are glad to be informed that an extensive monograph on the numerous typhoons of last year is in the press; the work is by the able pen of the Director of the Sikawei Observatory, and it will be published in the English language, be- ing particularly intended for the numerous navi. gators frequenting these seas, who no doubt will derive great benefit from it, most of them being familiar with the English language. We hope the steps taken the Chamber of Commerce to

by

secure an effective Meteorological Coast Service will soon be as successful as they deserve, ins spite

of temporary checks, which now and then may crop up. It must be borne in mind that obstruc tionists to such a useful undertaking incur an enormous responsibility.

We hear from trustworthy Chinese sources that advices have been received of a fresh out. break of the Mahommedas rebellion in the north-west provinces of China. The former head of the Mahommedan outbreak which took so many years to suppress, Ilan Yeu-ho, has crossed the frontier into Ili with his bands. Itc vip native of Si-agan in Shansi, and when first he embarked upon his rebellious career he killed his mother and family to save them from falling into the hands of the Imperialists. He was afterwards driven into Russian territory and was protected by the Russians. The Chinese insisted for a long time upon his rendition, but the Russians refused. Now he has broken into Chinese territory with his bands into the Tien Shan Pei-la, eight miles west of Karashahr, and Liu Chin-chai, the Military Governor of HamiT GARDENS, COOK-HOUSE, BATH- has sent three regiments of soldiers to check the rebels. It is further stated that there have been troubles between the Chinese and Russians rcs- pecting Ili tenitory. The Russian Governor in sisted on being addressed by King, the Governor of the New Dominion, as Ping-tu-ta-chen, which creates a difficulty as the Chinese would thus place the Russian officials on equal terms. It is supposed that the Russians could have restrained the rebels if they had liked.

It is hoped to very materially increase the value of the Daily News, and special attention will be paid to mer cantile subjects, so that the Chinesemay be placed en the best possible footing to compete with the subscribers and supporters of the Daily News. The support ofthe foreign community appears to be confidently calculated to second the efforts the proprietors are going to make for the good of China and that of all foreigners having a sinke in the country. The proprietors of the Daily News expect to do something, we suppose, for their own good, that is often the object of starting a newspaper, but we don't see that they ask the foreigners who "have a stake in the country "to take shares. However, the value of the Daily News will be materially increased if all the Chi- nese characters are put in the Chinese edition we have no doubt. And perhaps some good will be done to Chinese tea growers if the extracts from the Indian papers about Indian tea are translated into the Fu Pas

Persons who send Musters of Tea through the Post in Tins are requested to have them made flat or square instead of round, as it is impossible

to pack round tius securely in the mail bags. It is

believed that the tea-will-travel-more"attfely in flat tins, which are not so liable as round ones to be bulged in. 4 by 3 by 1 inches is suggested as a good site. The tins should not have sharp

comers.
