According to the Hocki, Messrs. Saionji, sagara and Toda, nobles, who recently went abroad in company with His Excellency Ito, were ordered by the Government to make inquiries into three matters: first, the rules which govern the nobility in their relations with the reigning Houses second, what services the nobility are expectel to render to their country; and third, the or- ganization of upper Houses of Parliament and the methods of opening a National Assembly,
A serious fire broke out at shirakawa, washire province, at 2.20 3.m. on the 18th inst. Carried by a strong wind the flying sparks set various parts of the town on fire simultaneously. The time about nine hundred houses, extending over blaze was not extinguished until 8 a.m., by which fourteen streets, had been burned to the ground. Many persons are reported to have been killed or injured; but, telegraphic communication being interrupted, no further particulars are yet known.
A despatch to the Choya Shimbun says that on the night of the 1th instant about thirty work. men engaged in the sulphur mine on the Yo- shinn mountain, in the province of Bungo, mutinied. They attacked the house of one of the dealers in produce, and killed the owner and office, dainagel the books, &c., set the building his family. Then they rushed into the district
discovered at a place about one r distant from on fire, and decamped. They were afterwards the mine, but were not arrested until seventeen of them had been killed and many others wounded. The police who engaged them also suffered severely.
On the 22nd instant at about a quarter to one an alarm of fire was heard; and the conflagration was soon discovered to be on lot No. 211 But, the residence of Mr. P. Heinemann, who is now absent from Japan. The lady of the house and a party of friends were at lunch at the time. Assistance was promptly rendered; and furniture, clothing and valuables were rescued and safely. deposited in the opposite compounds. The opening of the Museum in the Uyeno Emperor in person, who arrived punctually at Park on the 20th instant was presided by the to a.m. at the gates, where he was received by His Excellency General Yamada, Home Minis ter, on behalf of General Saigo, the Minister for Agriculture and Commerce. Naval and Military Bands were in attendance. General Yamada delivered a long address, congratulating the country upon its progress, and the institution upon the presence of the Emperor. Mr. Ma- chida, Superintendent of the Museum Bureau, followed; and His Majesty replied briefly, de- claring the Museum opened. After lunch the Emperor presided at the distribution of awards to the successful competitors in the Exhibition of Cereal and Forestry produce.-Japan Mail.
