A LONDON Telegram of the 13th instant, received.-PUTTING THE SHOT, (without a follow). this morning, announces that the Russian Am bassador to London has been summoned to St. Petersburg.

THE Regular monthly meeting ofst. John's Lodge: No 78, s.C. will be held in the Freemason's Huu, Zetland street, this evening at 8-30. Visit- ing brethem are cordially invited to attend,

We would call attention to a performance to be given this evening at the Garrison Theatre by Professor A. Mount, particulars of which will be found in our advertising columna.

We have received the programme of the Royal Artillery Sports to be held on the Cricket Ground to-morrow, commencing at to an. There are no less than 27 events on the card, and amongst other items we notice a "Menagerie" race which ought to afford some amusement,

"THE BUFFS" ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The second battalion of "The Bluffs" held their first athletic meeting in Hongkong on the Cricket Ground yesterday aftemoon in excellent weather and under most favorable auspices. The attendance, although'a large one, was below the usual average; but what was lacking in quantity was made up in quality. Amongst the spectators we noticed His Excellency the Administrator and Mrs. Marsh, Lieut-General and Mrs. Donovan, Major-General sargent, C.B., Adiniral Willes, Admiral Meyer, Commander-in-Chief of the French fleet in China, Colonel Parnell, C.B., and many other military and naval officers of rank. The manner in which the sports were managed reflects credit on all concerned. A better kept course we have never seen at any athletic gather- ing in Hongkong, the rule of keeping every per- son excepting the officers of the regiment, and the representatives of the press, nutside the ropes being rigidly enforced, and we hope at all future meetings to see this rule made general, The band of the regiment under Bandmaster Quinn played the following selection, and greatly added to the afternoon's enjoyment:

We notice the name of Mddle Cobianchi the excellent contralto singer who came here with Signor Cagli's opera company last year, in the names of a company of distinguished singers who arrived in New York. The whole company were vaccinated on arrival, in pursuance of some quarantine regulations.

principle of the occupiers of land being the owners, Whilst Parliament is going back again to the in Ireland at any rate, and perhaps soon in Eng- land, China is advancing to the principle of speculators owning land, instead of the culti vators of the soil under the Lord of the soil. We hear that the great Hangchow banker, Hoo, has bought the whole of the island at the mouth of the Yangtsze, known as Bush Island and Block House Shoal for Tis. 40,000. What will he do with it? He was Tso Tsung-tang's banker, and we recently heard that Tso was against specu lators buying up land. Mercury.

We hear that it is not improbable that an amalgamation between the two rival Telephone companies will shortly become an accomplished fact.

The progranume of events présented few features of special interest, and we think it a pity that one or two races open to our local athletes were not introduced. The racing however was fairly interesting, and we doubt not that several of the winners possess the gift of going, although, as no official times were taken, no comparison can be made between yesterday's running at various distances, and the racing at the Civilian sports. The "Menagerie race, which brought to the post a Zoological Gardens on a small scale, created great amusement, the ultimate victory of Capt. Davis's representative-a monkey of the fashioned sort being exceedingly popular with the spectators. The finish was a capital one, for although the monkey ran as straight as an arrow, and laid himself down to his work like an ex- perienced sprinter, giving one the idea that it was not his first appearance between the flags, the turkey and duck ran well, and but for an un." fortunate collision ten yards from the tape might have been first and second, instead of second and third. Both the calf and goat were clean out of the hunt, and we fancy they would have done better had Messrs. Allen and Lloyd ridden in stead of driving them. The rabbit must have had a good show had he run straight, and both the peli- can and pig were well in, if they had only run up to theirtrials. The tugs of war werethe most uninter esting exhibitions of the kind ever seen in this co- lony. The first tug was between a picked regi- mental team, and a scratch team of police and gun- ners arranged on the ground. The scratch lot had weight on their side, and as the tug was only a short one, it looked good adds on their winning; however they were not prepared fox wingular tactics of the soldiers. When the word was given the regimental teams, instead of standing and pulling in the method hitherto adopted in Hongkong, sat down, and gradually working their heels into the ground became a sort of fix- ture which a team of untrained men were unable to move. The result was that the scratch spring Meeting by Tis. 600-mounting in the team, after a short but sharp struggle were gross to Tha. 4,295. All the events are rather vanquished; and a team of marines from the Victor Emanuel quickly shared the same

This style of pulling is not sportsman-stakes, which entrants seem to be rather chary of like; it is quite uninteresting and unexciting to the spectators; and it is not a fair trial of strength. yesterday the 7th inst. between the hours of eleven A considerable amount of powing took place The principle of this method is to pull the rope and one, the grass course being opened for the over the fine, not the opposing team. When it is desired to forward letters to the United states, by a sailing ship which is not noti- fied as carrying a mail, it is only necessary to post the letters in the ordinary way, marked with the name of the ship, and prepaid 10 cents per half ounce as asual. The Post Office then undertakes the duty of obtaining notice of depar- ture and despatching the correspondence. It is least one day before the date fixed for sailing.

TEMUSTERS.

Persons who send Musters of Tea through-the Post in Tins are requested to have them made flar or square instead of round, as it is impossible to pack round tins sccinely in the mail.bags. Itis believed that the tea will travel more safely in flat tins, which are not so liable as round ones to be bulged in. 4 by 3 by 13 inches is suggested as a good size. The tins should not have sharp

comers.
