The Mainichi Shimbun mentions that the new Chinese Minister, Mr. Li, being very anxious for the development of the navy of his own courtry, frequently makes inquiries of Admiral Kawamura, Minister of the Navy, respecting the Japanese maritime force. He is also said to be very fond of the martial music composed in Japan, and has lately sent two or three music books to military officials in China.

According to the Jainichi, there are within. the jurisdiction of the Osaka Fu, one hundigd al thirty-seven inines, of which forty-four have been opened during the past two years. The estal value of their out-turn to 1881 was 2,734,000 yea, and the tax paid by them 1.750 yen. The most remunerative are said to be those which Mr. Golai Tomatsu rents fren the Government.

During the math of February 1 vessels, gregating 39,334 tons, were put into the water by dhe various firms on the lyde. Only one sailing vessel is included in the returns, and the largest launch was the Glenagle of 4,000 tons. The new work comprises t screw-steamers (one built of steel), one sailing ship, one barge, one iron barge, one steam yacht, and one hopper barge. Last month r vessels, measuring 21,880 tons, were launched, being, in point of numbers as well as tonnage, considerably tnder the total for the current month. The figures are also in excess of the corresponding month in previous years. In February, 1881, the returns aftounted 18 24,754 tons; in February, 1880, te 15,874 tons; is February, 1879, to 18,200 tons. There is plenty of work on hand, and the trade continues in a healthy condition. In the lower reaches of the river the tooling of new orders is keeping pace with the output, there being 57 vessels our hand as compared with 54 last month.
