THIS DAY, FOUR P..

A brisk business still cuntinues in shares, important transactions in several of our local stocks having been completed since we last wrote. Banks have again heen placed at 112 per cent. premium, and at this rate a steady demand exists for a large number of shares,-which, however, have not been forthcoming up to the time of our going to press. Docks have attracted more attention lately than all the other stocks combined. We referred yesterday to very extensive time transactions which had been reported, fit which we were not `in a position to verify. We now learn that at 54 for the end of the present month, 56 for the end of April, and 58 for the end of May, business on a very large scale was negotiated This forenoon, although no liberties have been taken with the stock, it showed deciden symptoms of weakness, holders appearing inlined to sell at 53 ex div., for cash. However, no actual transfers | came under our observation. A lot of Sugar shares are on the market at present. holders, after vainly trying to obtain offers at 167), now unsuccessfully soliciting 165. The Hongkong Ice Company's stock is in strong demand at 130, consequent upon the Company's very satisfactory report for the past year, which will be found in an- other column. A return of 18 per cent. per annum on the capital invested, must be considered highly gratifying in these ex 'pensive days of running public companies, No other business requires special notice.

LETTER BOXES.

Many boxes of letters are received at the Post Office not sealed, that is to say, the box is fastened with scaling wax, but there is no impression of a seal.

The attention of boxholders is called to the necessity of carefully scaling such boxes with some recognisable seal, and of sending a chit- book or receipt with them. The omission of the latter precaution leaves a doubt as to whether the contents of the box ever reached the Fost Office: the omission of the forner, as to whether past of them might not have been abstracted for $10.00 to $5.00 the sake of the Postage stamps...
