THIS DAY, FOUR P.M. Banks are rather weaker to-day, sellers

offering to do business at 112 per cent. premium, without finding customers. We do not look upon this apparent deprecia- tion as a movement of any significance, as transactions in any kind of share business are at present of the most nominal cha- racter, Hongkong Fires gontinue very firm, offers to purchase at 970 per share

Hotels have again been negotiated at 102, and a few more shares might be obtained at the same rate. Sugars remain very quiet, neither buyers or sellers ap- parently caring much to make advances. After Chinese New Year we shall do doubt see some spirit infused into the general business in shares and stocks, the present dead and alive condition of things being attributable to the holiday season, and the absence of recent intelligence from Shang- hai, owing to a breakage in the wire. As will be seen by an intimation in an- other column, telegraphic communication with Shanghai has been temporarily re- stored. We append a list of quotations corrected up to the time ofour going to press.

LETTER BOXES.

Many boxes of letters are received at the Post Office not sealed, that is to say, the box is fastened with sealing wax, but there is no impression of a seal.

The attention of boxholders is called to the necessity of carefully scaling such boxes with some recognisable seal, and of sending a chit- book or receipt with them. The omission of the latter precaution leaves a doubt as to whether the contents of the box ever reached the Post Office: the omission of the former, as to whether part of them might not have been abstracted for the sake of the Postage stamps.

TEA MUSTERS.

Persons who send Musters of Tea through the Fost in Tins are requested, to have them made flat or square instead of round, as it is impossible to pack round tins securely in the mail bags. It is believed that the tea will travel more safely in flat tine, which are not so liable as round ones to bo bulged in. 4 by 3 by inches is suggested as a good size. The tins should not have sharp

corners.
