Commercial.

THIS DAY, Four P.. A very large amount of exchange bust- ness has been transacted in the stock of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation since our last issue at a slight advance on the previous quotation. Both for cash, and on time-the scrip to be taken up at the end of the present month--a very large number of shares were negotiated at 121 per cent. premium yesterday after noon, and at the same rate further tran- sactions have been reported this morning. The supply of shares on the market would, however appear to have been in excess of the demand, for there are still sellers at 121, although the stock may be considered fairly firm at that quotation. Docks have

been made the medium of a fair business at go per cent, premium, and there are still offers to purchase at that price. We think it likely that the demand for further shares at that quotation will be responded to during the afternoon. Steamboats are much firmer than has been the case for some considerable time. At 24 per share premium for cash and the end of the month a few small sales have been booked, the stock leaving off very firm, with buyers. We have heard several inquires after Sugars and Hotels, and there is a steady demand for Fire Insurance shares at cur- rent rates; however, no actual business has come under our observation. Other quota- tions are merely of a nominal character.
