The villagers made a stout resistance, fry-amas being freely used on both sides, and in the wife one of the villagers was shot dead, and six are reported to have been wounded, some of them severely. There is every reason to believe that there will be one, or even two additional Arctic stations. These may swell the list of persons engaged to over 200, all taking active part in this enterprise, which will cost, altogether, upward of a million roubles. If it be considered that besides all this magnetic observation in more southern regions will be im mensely stimulated, for importance and costliness and enterprise will be fully appreciated. One Russian expedition will undertake the heaviest part of the work. I will have to traverse about 6,630 miles, and establish itself in an exception- ally cold region at the mouth of the Lena.
