To The EBITOkay 108 "[[anxane TurckATH.”

As one of those who, according to "A. B. C.'s" statemeat, "displayed the singular ability of delivering a philosophical dissertation in the form of a speech on the subject of the distribution of prizes," I have to rehun ham the compliment in the shape of the following remarks-

The gist of his strictures on the professons of the Commercial-school seems to be that they really are interested in keeping the institution within its commercial hounds, for the simple reason that they are not up to the branches of superior instruction which is the ambition of the Lyceum suppraters za intrasluce.

man Cup, has retained its popularity, showing a substantial entry of 20 ponies, and a good con- test may be confidently looked forward to. The Bankers Plate has disappeared altogether from the programme, but the German Cup under its altered conditions, presents quite a formidable appearance with its two dozen entries, and should certainly prove one of the most exciting events during the meeting. The Parsee Cup almost in- variably attracts a large complement of griffins, and 20, as against 21 in 1891, must be considered eminently satisfactory. The Professional Cup shows a great falling off, there being only 17 entries to set off against 21; but notwithstanding this numerical disparity, the class of punies like ly.to face the starter on this occasion are far above the average, so that an interesting rare may be safely relied on. With entries in place of the 8 in Wild Eddy's' year, the Town Plate will still be certain to prove one of the crack" events, and it would be well worth seeing were Wik! Faldy

Tajmahal, and First Cornet to oppose each other. For the Broker's Cup, confined to subscription griffins, the entry is exactly the same as for the German Cup, with the addition of Glengarry, and as there are penalties for previous winners, most likely recipient of this valuable trophy, for it will be rather a difficult task to pick out the

C." that the leachers of the Commercial-school have, every one of them, gone though a complete course of superior studies, ancient hitterature, natural and philoso- abical sciences, long before they nailertonk the task of training youths to commerce. They did not owe their education to Lyceuma Sources, but to the tuition of the Jesuit priests at St. Joseph's, sixteens year ago, and to other masters abroad. One of them took his degree of philosophy in Belgium and published at Lisbon a treatise entitled "Outlines of Analytical Philo saphy, besides several scientifical contributions to the Portuguese newspapers. philosophy at st. Joseph's in Macao; anther Another taught svas a professor of physics and chemistry. Had the proprietors of the Commercial-school wished to transform their institution into an establish- ment of purely superior instruction, they could carry out their programme to perfection, without requiring the slightest help from any Lyceum.

Laus in ore proprio viteseit, but I cannot stand the ridiculous and base assertion that the importance of commercial studies is advocated solely for the benefit of the teachers. It was for the benefit of the rising generation of Macao that the Camercial-school was founded. The founders, the teachers, the pupils, their parents and the public at large, are under the strong conviction that superior stenkirs, as such, are an ornamental superchaty, considering the present state af degradation into which this town has sunk. There are already a few branches of superior studies gone through at our schools. To go beyond them into the regim of high Greek | and transcendantal metaphysics, when the fetters of poverty are chasing upon this place, ence se prosperous by commerce, would be sheer insanity. When the Jesuits taught sciences here, Macan was in a far better condition than it is now. There was still ample opportunities for ductors, lawyers, and scientists to cara decent livelihoix by their professions. Presently the chance and gone. As trade pays best, anf there is no rack in Macno, nor there is any future prospect, it is only natural nay, it is a necessity, that the youth of Macan should hark northwards and Stuthwards for Commercial employments. It is my smcere wish that they may sooner or later settle down in business, here, orgbroad, and thus retard the progress of decadence and poverty which their country is subjected to. The Lyceum schemers may go on deaning of superior instruc tion and high sciences; the public will never. Erique's Whisper countenance their views, much less when they are couched in such acrimonious and insulting expressions as it haspleased "A. B. C."to indulge in. change Plate promises to become as generally popular with promoters of lotteries as the old German Cup used to be, and very properly so, as it is a valuable and important race, which abnost invariably brings the crack ponies of the meeting in antagonism. Seventy per cent. of $392 is $274.40, and to win this prize one enter- prising gentleman paid for Tajmahal the large sum of $202, that is, laid nearly three to one on this pony against the field. And yet people say that there is no enterprise in Hongkong, and that money is tight. First Cornet was made a respectible second favorite, although a long way behind Mr. Paul's champion, with Wild Eddy a fair third. The German Cup for subscription griffins proved the most interesting event of the series, and at the same time the most valuable.
