Markets.

REPORTED BY Cuirror Firus aND CORRECTED TO DATE.

Although actual share business is stift Jan. 28, SALTEE, French steamer, 323, Garceau Jan. 27, ANADYR, French steamer, 33te and Jan. 17, TILLIE BAKER, American ship, 819 American Thill, zo yank, per pleca

very quiet, the general tone of the market, so far as our important local stocks are concerned, is much healthier than was the

case on Saturday. Banks are decidedly

firmer; when we last wrote they were, freely offered at 116 per cent, preminm, without finding purchasers, whereas there are now plenty buyers at that rate, but not a single share on the market. We do not pretend to be able to understand, far less to explain these extraordinary changes; it is simply our duty to report them. Not a single share has changed hands, yet the stock is on altogether a different footing to what it was on Saturday, Chinese Insurances have slightly depre- cated, offers to sell at 282h, meeting with no response, and a still further fall would appear to be imminent from the tone of the market. China Fires are also on the down-

ward line, business to a small extent having

arc

been booked at 290, a reduction of two dollars on previous quotation. At this rate, however, there are still commissions to buy which have not been executed. Docks, on the other hand, are rather better, transfers having been effected for cash both at 44 and 45 per cent. premium. At the higher' rate a few shares are still on offer." Steamboats

not quite, so firm, ofers to sell at 24 per share premium ex. div. going unheeded. Sugars are rather at a discount, a large number of shares being in the hands of the brokers for disposal at 165. With the stock a sort of drug on the market, it is reasonable to infer that a lower quotation will have to be accepted before any legitimate business can be transacted. Other stocks remain nominally as per appended list.

LETTER BOXES.

Many boxes of letters are received at the Post Office not scaled, that is to say, the box in fastened with scaling wax, but there is no impression of a seal.

The attention of boxholders is called to the necessity of carefully scaling such boxes with some recognisable seal, and of sending a chit. book or receipt with them. The omission of the latter precaution leaves a doubt to whether the contents of the box ever reached the Post Office: the omission of the former, as to whether part of them might not have been abstracted for the sake of the Postage stamps,
