By our last advices from the North, Sir Thomas Wade was still at Tiantain, suffering from sovere, cold and loss of voice.
Our readers may possibly remember a very serious quarrel which took place some ten years ago between a military mandarin named Chon Koo-jui and Li Shih-chung, Commander-in-chief of the forces of Kiong-nan. An edict np. peared in the Peking Gazette of 8th July, 1871, in reply to a memorial from
from a former resident of Shanghai- "About one month ago. I had a visit from Li Taotai from Bang.cbang (Li Kin-yag), a oivil mandarin with a light blue button. He caine only a short time ao from the south with great powers. It is said that he is a relation of Li Hung-chang. He is on- traate to supervise in this part of tho vast dominions of the Czar, the exocu- tion of the late treaty. He spoke to me also of Pau Taotai, and his attempt to establish a cotton spinuing toana- fatory in Shanghai. He sail, that this enterprize has now been taken away frun Tautai Pan, and that it is now in a fair way. I was asked by Li Tholai to accompany him to Wla divostock, which I did. The Russians soit a man-of-war to Passiett especi- ally to Catch him and brought him back here in the same manner. He was received exceedingly well. He wale a good impression. He showed me the last Treaty (Chinese text). He told me that this Treaty has been made in thres languages French, Russian, and Chi. пече. A very strange stipulation is contained therein, namely that the Chi- nese of Chi-mu-ho, Sushan, and other parts of this province who devote them- selves to agriculture, that is, old sot- tlers, should now remain also under Chinese jurisdiction and be free of all taxes towards the Russians. The Rus- sians seus not to like this stipulation, and I should not be astonished if troubles should arise thereby in future. The Chinese are making all prepara tions for making of Hang-ching a large city, and they even intend to erect a telegraph line between Niigata and Kirin. Furthermore about 10,000 families (?) of immigrants are expected from northern Chili and Shantung to populate more thickly the frontier. To oach family the Government pays Tls, 20, for which they have to build a dwelling, and to purchase the beasts necessary for the cultivation of land which will be allotted to them, and for the first year of their settlement a special subsidy is besides promised to thorn."-Mercury.

There has boou so much damp, however, and so much show has fallen, that those why enjoy hunting during the cold weather are deprived of this pleasure. The ground wis too soft, now it is. frozen and icy. The river at this point is still opou; the sides are lined with ice, and flating ico obstracts the channel. It may close auy day, as it is closed by jamned ice in ame of the wins. The frozou ponds in the Recreation Ground have furnished fine skating for those who enjoy this delightful exercise, and, they present a gay appearance when youth and beauty meet, to race on skates with glowing foot. This is one of our chief exercises and amusements during the wintor,

Eight of the Chinese students, recently returned from America hava bean placed under the cara and instruc-' tion of Dr. Mackenzie, for the study of medicine. They will reaído, close by the Hospital, and in addition to related stadies, will attend daily clinics at that institution. The other students are. assigued to different posts and duties
some to the naval school, sine to telegraphy, and some to the torpedo and mechanical school at Taka. We hear that in some, if not all these latter
posts, the strictest surveillance is exercised over them, as though no- thing but mean and detestable acts could be expected of them. Whereas far as I only good reports, so have heard, have followed them all along the way from their residences in the States, as regards their manliness, diligence, and moral character. The treatinent they are receiving seems to be based on the ground that, having
