ed-up, although his action when óxten- ded is as taking as over. The future first favourite for the Darby is as fine as a --a star, and appears to have quite re. covered from his temporary lameness. Dauntloss and Lord of the Isles keep pottering along, the last-named having quickly rocovered from his recent lamoness. Grimm Donth, Flycatcher, Wild Eddy, Wild Surf, and Redstart have arrived from Amoy, and a couple of Mr. Henry's from Shanghai, so that we can confidently look forward to some exciting work after the oud of the present week.
CORRESPONDENCE.
[We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by Correspondents).
THE "CATHOLIO REGISTER.”- TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONGKONG TELEGRAPH." SIR-Roferring to the latter in your yesterday's issue over the signature A Catholic," it is much to be regretted that so respectable a paper as the Telegraph should permit itself to be made the me- dium for propagating the idle and ap- parently malicious gossip of any portion of our community, knowing the same to be wholly slevoid of truth. As the statements, -however, have gone forth to the public. they require, to be taken some notion of, lest the credulous or prejudiced might be deceived into believing that they possessed some shadow of truth. That a black sheep' is to be found in every flock is a generally admitted fact, and your corro-pondent evidently belongs to the category, urless indeed, which seems most likely, he is sailing ander false colours; for no Oatho- lie worthy of the name could possibly pen such an anti-Catholic tirade, which is, moreover, a tissue of mis-statements from beginning to end. The Catholic Register, permit me to say, is the most, if not the only, infopondent journal in Hongkong. It soeks but the moral support of its readers and Catholics generally, your cor- respondent & Catholio" and bis follow- ing, if he has any, always excepted. With regard to the closing of its career, I have no hesitation in asserting my belief that' tho Catholia Register will probably out- live any of its contemporaries in this Co- lony, and will be found flourishing in vigorous youth when your correspondent's material parts shall have become resolved into its native elements. Both slanderers and their slanders quickly sink into ob- livion; moral and religious truths, on the contrary, are over green, being blessed with an eternal youth. A glance at the files of the Register will convince any un prejudiced parson that the Catholic weekly has faithfully carried out the programme sketched in its prospectus. It is an untruth pure and simple to say that the Register has become the scorn and byeword of the representatives of the interests itadvocates: on the contrary, it is gonerally regarded as a true and faithful exponent of Catholio opinion. Unfortunately, however, some call themselves Catholics, who possess no title to the name. To auch, indeed, the Catholic weekly will ever be unacceptable, According to your correspondent, the Re- gister has been deteriorating. If however, you will refer to the China Mail of the 24th September fast, and to numerous other Indian and Australian papers. you will find long and loud praises of the Register's masterly articles. Your correspondent, if he is a Catholic, which Ivery much doubt, must be a poor specimen indeed; one of those the Church could very well dispense with, who are in fact anything but a credit to her. A true Ontholic would blush to write such a farrago of contemptible trash against a Catholic paper, which bas over atriven to uphold Catholic truths and mo- rals, and will ever continue to do so. Thanking you for the insertion of this let tar.-I am, &c.

PEKING.
The N. O. Daily News Peking cor- respondent hears that the entire num- ber of Japanese youths-thirteen in all
studying Chinese at the capital are ordered back to Japan, to the very great regret of the students themselves, their Chines, touchers, and their Euro. pean friends. This step is probably dictated by a desire for retrenchment, which Japan appears to need so badly. They leave the capital all together on
Dec. 2nd. This will throw a numbɔr of Chinese, teachers Kuan-hua out of employment, who during the past two or more years have had pretty lucrative engagements. The only Japanese, or as we should now probably say Nippon- ese, remaining in Peking will be those of the diplomatic service, which too has boen stripped of all supernumerary members. Japan in this respect seems imitating Chins, in withdrawing hor educational students. The Japanese come to study the spoken mandarin only, as they have a perfectly good knowledge of the written character in their own country. China has nothing in the way of science to teach the Japanese.
A private telegram has been received stating that the President of the United States bus recommended the cessation of the silver dollar coinage, in bis mes sage to Congress. Silver dollars have been going more into use of late months in America, and the recommen. dation for the repeal of the Blaine Coinage Aot may be meant moro as a menace to England than as a serious proposal which the President, and his Cabinet are desirous of seeing carried into effect. They may hope that Eng- land may become so alarmed at a farther decline in Indian exchange as to increase the offers of hor help in the rehabilitation of silver which her repre- Beritatives made at the Monetary Con- ference.
There was a severe earthquake in the district of Kanchou in Kansub, on the 25th day of the 6th moon (July 10th.) Of men, women and children forty-two were killed and twenty-seven injured; of animals over one hundred were killed, and of houses one hundred and twenty apartments, or chien. At another place, called Chieh-chou, two handred and forty-seven were killed, including men, women, and childran ; one hundred injured, a large namber of houses destroyed, and three hundred animals killed. This was followed in the 7th moon, on the 3rd, 4th, and 7th days by a dreadful downpour of rain, and twelve ching sixteen mu of land in which seven persons were drowned
inuudated. The Emperor is requested to relax taxes and to dispense charity.
offering 34 for December 31st, but without obtaining any response, and there seems overy probability that the stock will be quetód at a still higher rate before the day is out. The only apparent reason for this sudden rash on Docks, is simply a desire to follow the money, Heavy investments hava been made on behalf of a firm who ought to know the actual value of the stock, and doubtless the public havo good reason for following a good example. Hanks have also improved slightly, a goodly number of shares having changed hands at 120 per cent. pro-- mium for the end of the mouth, and at this rate the stock is decidedly firm. No business has been reported in other stocks.
SHARES.
The contemplated changes in the amoant and collection of daties upon opiam stand in abeyance for the present, There are now three Powars who may be said to bave anti-opium.clauses in their treaties with China, viz., the United States, Brazil, aud Russia. The point was brought forward when the Brazilian treaty was being negotiated last year; bat as it was feared it might be an insult to Great Britain, the clauss was not agreed to. Before the late notification, however, we believe the Chinese had at last succeeded in insert- ing the clause, the treaty with the U.S. having paved the way for both the Chinese and Brazilians. There was a rumour some months ago that the new Russian treaty would also contain such a clause. We looked in vain, however, for it in any of the translations of that treaty, but we believe it is to be found, like the British one, in the tariff. The now Russo-Chinese treaty contains nothing with regard to opiam which was not to be found in the old one. Tho Berlin Correspondent of the Morning Post is therefore wrong when he tele- graphed lately in regard to the Kuldja treaty, that it permitted the Russians to convey opium into China. There are a few who believe that Russia might become a formidablo rival of India for the noxious drug, and more especially now as the now treaty opens up favour. able commercial opportunition in the north-west, and seeing that Central Asia would prove an excellent poppy growing region.

A city man went home early the other morning, and fheating the sad reproachful eyes of his wife, apolo- gised: "My darling, I think you'll bo sorry for this when you get shober."
The new condition of things in Greçce is says the Indian Daily news giving rise to much activity in the direction of improving communication. Not only is the cutting of the Isthmus of Corinth in hand, but railways are projected, and will no doubt soon be begun between Athens and Larisas, and between Arta sad Volo, in Northern Greece; while în the Peloponnesus one line is to ran along the coast of the Gulf from Corinth to Patras, rnother starting from Corioth will run south to Mycene and Argos. and then turning westward through Arcadia, passing Andritzena, Tripolis, and Megalopolis, again turn southward through the old Mossenia and end at Kalamata on the Galf of Koron. This line, beside opening up the Peninsula for purposes of commerce, will traverno the country of the highest interest to travellors, both from its associations in the past and its great natural beauty. A short line is to connect the little port of Katakolo on the coast of Elis with the thriving town of Pyrgos, which is not more than ten miles from Olympia. If theso enterprises are well carried out. an immense stride will have been taken by the Greek kingdom on the road to civilisation. the history of the four- mile railway which connects Atheas with the Phaus is encouraging to the projectors of the new. lines Constructed originally at an outside cost of £800,000, ita present capital is estimated at eight millions.
