[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT].
MACAO, 8th December. Referring to my communication of the 24th alto,, in which I stated there were no grounds whatovor for reforin either in the programme of instruction actually in vogue here, or in the method of teaching, I will now proceed to tullin ny last, na well as at private schools. I refer to Portuguese literature, or the the promotors of the Macao Lycoum that their self-imposed task of reform-study and analysos of classical writers ing, however praise-worthy it may be in itself, is if no earthly aso undor existing circumstances.
in prose and in verso, to a completo course of colloquial and grammatical English and French,, to Latin and. There, was of old, a venerable Arch. Elocution, to Arithmetic and Algebra. bishop of Braga, in Portugal, who told True, we have not classes for Philosophy, the Cardinals assembled in the Council Greek, German, and higher Mathema- of Trent that reform should begin with tios, as there are in the Lyceum. But we the illustrissimi et reverendissimi Car-havo something far more useful than dinals themselves. Had the worthy prelate soon the days of Lyceums, lie would not have hesitated in using a similar retort.. The institution, as it is
all that De nosthenes, Xenophon, Hero- dotus, Homer, Virgil, Horace, and
Ovil ever wrote; far mora necessary than Metaphysics, Ethics, Integral and at present constituted in Portugal. is Differential calculus, and that is a Com- defective in many important points and mercial class. This class begins with theoretical and mental arith...notio; redundant in many others. It is a
tbon proceeds to commercial nc- reflection of the old systorn of educa tion, when everything was acquired counting proper, with the following through the medium of dead languages. Programmo:-Profit and loss, pergon- It aims at training youths to the re-tages, interest, methods of calculating quirements of our are by a systein of decrepit lore. It pretends to toach art by means of science, to develop modern thought with the ferrole of Doctor Syntax. Still, it is held out as a model of intellectual training, and the basis of educational reformn! There are many adversaries of the Lyconm in Portugal who would bo glad to seo the institution ra-modelled according to the requirements of our present age. The foundation of the "Instituto In dustrial e Commercial" of Lisbon was
due to the spirit of reaction against the old grooves of intellectual training up- held by the national Lyceums. Vis- count Almeida Garrett, an illustrious Portuguese writer and statesman, has launched very severe criticisins at the education system of old-fashioned
adopted in Portugal. In Eugland, there is a decided movement towards a
professional education, and many col. leges have recently been opened, where a really modern education is obtained quite adapted to the requiro. ments of our opoch. I will conclude this digression with a few lines from the prophetic pen of Carlyle, The eminent essayist said: "What a farce it is cramming dead languages (or trying to do so) into the majority, quite irrespective of what their duties in life will be; they call it developing the mind, as if any quantity of such inanimate mechanical teaching could foster the growth of anything, much more of mind, which grows, not like a vegetable, but like a spirit, by myster- ious contact of spirit thought kind ling itself at the fire of living thought, How shall he give kindling, in whose own inward man there is no live coal, but all is burnt out to a dead gramma. tical cinder. Alas! so it is everywhere; so will it ever be till tho, hodman is discharged or reduced to hod-bearing and an architect is hired and on all hands fitly encouraged till communities and individuals discover, not without sur prise, that fashioning the souls of a generation by knowledge can rank on a level with blowing their bodies to pieces by gunpowder; that with generals and field-marshals for killing, there should be world-honoured digni- taries, and, wore it possible, true God. ordained priests, for teaching."
interest in accounts current, commercial and bank discount, fire, life, and marine insurance; method of making stuto- nents of general and particular aver- age; equivalents and roduction of the principal commercial weights and moasures; calculations of freight; charter-parties; theory and arbitration of exchange; equation of payments; averaging acconita; import and export calculations; the stocks; invoices, account sales, and commercial corro- spondeuce. After this course is gone through a year, book-keeping by doable entry is taught, while the study of languages is carried on. During eigh. teen months, several pupils have been studying the above in a thoroughly practical and business style. The fol lowing was the programme carried out:
-Debtor and creditor, explanations of their meaning; the fundamental prin oiple of double entry, elucidated by the purchase and sale of merchandise; cash receipts and payments, how posted; Cash purchases and sales, how journal. ised; mixed transactions of cash and credit; form of cash-book with and without discount and bank columns'; bills; definitions, law, and method of journalising acceptances; remittances, and receipts of bills, endorsements, payments, discount, etc., freight and charges accounts, how postod; consign- meats on commission; sales on coin- mission; single and joint adventures; profit and loss account, bow opened; capital acount; auxiliary books; prin- cipal books; correction of errors in the journal and ledgor; checking entries ; book-kooping of a limited liability company; calculation of dividends, Details of transfer of shares, &c. shipping companios; shipping clerk's department, and six mouths transac tions of a general merchant's house, embracing the ordinary details of the Chinese import and export trade of Hongkong and the Coast Ports, posted in their auxiliary and principal books, with balances atrack monthly.
This is our present substitute for Greek and Philosophy so much advo- cated by the admirers of the Lyceum. It is needless to repeat that the Ly- ceum programine does not even men- tion a word about commercial studies. Could such a programme be seriously held out as the basis of the so-called educational reform for Maono, or for any trading station in the world? Rizum tomatis amici, et inimici.
My second point is the question of Method, as alluded to before. I have a great deal to say on this all-import- ant topic, but as the present commu- nication is getting too long, I will re- serve what remains to be said for a future article..
COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
THIS DAY, One P.M. Banks have been made the medium of some rather extensive tim o transaotions since we last wrote. A large business was done on Saturday afternoon at 117 for the end of the month, and a fair number of transfers have boon effected this morning at a slight increase on that rate, namely, 118 per cent. premium. There have been no cash sales, bat the stock is vory firm in the market, and wo think could not be procured at a lower rate than that last quoted. We hear from Shanghai that the shares of the Yang- tazo Insurance Association havo mado nu upward movement, buyers offering Taols 865 without finding sollers. Chinose Iusur- anoes aro again. slightly weakor, holders showing an anxioty to soll at 290 per share. Docks are, as wo predicted on Friday would be the caso, again on the downward line. This stock has been on offer at 33 per cent. premium for some few days without leading to business, and this morning a firm offor to purchase at 32 would at once bo socopted; however up to the time of our going to press not a blow has been struck. Sagars remain noniinally at 158, with sellors; but Ice shares are, probably owing to the continued hot weather, in far botter olour, buyers offering 130 without findling sellers. A fow Storm- boats are on offer this morning at 21 par sharo premium.
And now to the real question before de. Is the programme of instruction actually adopted in the schools of Macao so defective na to demand a radical reform? That programme embraces Elementary instruction, Primary, and what is techincally termed Secondary, instruction. Elementary instruction, comprising alphabet, spelling, reading, writing and learning grammar by heart, is obtained at a few private schools, and at the girls' public school.. At St. Joseph's there was also a sepa rate class for that initial stage of tuition. Primary instruction is gone into both at St. Joseph's and the Commercial schools. Its programine is as follows:- plain reading, Portuguese grammar, elementary arithmetic, caligraphy, geo- A gentleman travelling in a railway graphy, history of Portugal, Sacred carriage was endeavouring, with consi- History, catechism, and sundry acces-derable earnestness, to impress some sory subjects.
