THE TEMPERANCE HALL: CONCERTS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE " HONGKONU TELEORAPIL"
S.-I was glad to notice the para- graph in yesterday's Telegraph on the sub- ject of the concert at the Temi eraneo Ball. The person you refer to, who is supposed to manage these concerts, has apparently lost his head by being patronised by a few mombers of the musical upper circles of our would-be aristocratic community; When these concerts were first established at the old house in Stanley Street I was a frequent porformer; but in those days the entertaimente were given for the amuse- ment of sailors and soldiers, and not, as is Dow the case, to gratify the vanity of a select cirole of civilians, who constitute both performers and the best part of the audience. It was gratifying to me to read your remarks on the want of politeness exhibited towards yourself by the organiser of the concort, for it is not to you alone, but also to many others, who have for years mainly contributed to the success of the fortnightly Temperance Hall, concerts, that the same disrespect has been shown. One of the principal contributors for a long time to the entertainments at Stanley Street, was left out in the cold on the occasion of the inauguration of the present hall, in favour of two or three members of the Choral Society, who were anxious not to gratify soldiers and sailors but to appear before His Excellency the Governor, who presided. That was the way the person who manages these concerts requited the services of a gentleman who had frequen- tly contributed to the success of these con- certs, without whose aid they could not have been held at all. Toudyism should be kopt out of a public institution.-Yours, &c..

H. H. THE MAHARAJAH'S DRAG HOUNDS.
The following is an account, by the special correspondent of the Singapore Times, of a meet of H.H. the Mabara- jab's drag hounds: -- - Drag-hunting with the Mabarajah's bounds bids fair to become the most popular sport in the Colony. Each mest attracts some new face, and once the delicious excite- met of a run has been tasted, fow can resist the temptation' to partake of it again and again. One cannot have a surfeit of such enjoyment.
The bugbear of many who have not yet gone out is pig-pits. It would be easy to show that there is no occasion for alarm on this score, but perhaps people who are fanked by mythical dangers would succumb altogether un- der the slight mishaps that are inci- deutul to the sport, and it is probably to the advantage of all that they should stay away. They are losers by their foars, and wo, from the lofty stand- point of experience, can afford to look down upon them with indifference, or, let us say, pity.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH-FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9TH, 1881.
this point the casualties were limited to one horse and ridor fast in a bog, one riler alot over his horse's head, one difference of opinion between a pony and his rider in which the former. scored; but nothing in the slightest dogroo serious. Aftor crossing Cluoy Rond and oucircling Mr. Geiger's house, the hounds rau on to the Maharajah's grounds, giving tonguo the whole way, and, getting on the turf in the avenue, wont off at a tremendous paco, turn- ing off to the right just as Tyersall came in sight. From the avenus a splendid view was got of the romainder of the run up to the finish, which took place near the barracks in a hornet's uest, much to the disconfort of one or two of the fiold. The foncos were all in the second half of the run, and occasion. ed the temporary soparation of soveral of the riders from their horses, but the spills were of an ordinary character. A father and son, who in the last ran gob thrown out at the beginning, quite ro- gained their character as bold riders, being in the front from first to last.
During the past week the bounds have not been idle. Holley and Nash "have shown the way over a good 'donl of country, and two more have to be added to the already long list of the "best runs that have ever been known."
racecourse
On Friday, the 25th (yostorday), the Racecourse was tho appointed place of moting, and it was announced that ladies would bò able to follow, the line of country having boon specially saleotel. We did not notice any of the fair sex prosent, but at the ladies-moot mon mustered in strong fores. The rou was barron of any incidsats worth describing, boing, right through, one hard gallop over goodish country, but a prettier sight than the hounds follow. ing the scent along the could not be imaginol. The rails were taken by the huntsman and a local jock in grand style, bat the other members of the field showed that they thought discretion was the bettor part of valour by kouping outside. There were two water jumps at the finish, over which all got successfully, but one man was seen to frantically embrace the neck of his horse for some reason or other. It was a jolly good gallop, and ladies would have enjoyed it.
TIENTSIN.
The water is very low both on the bar and in the river, steamers usually take two tides to reach Tientsin.
The Haoting was three days and a half outside waiting for water. The Oscar Vidal is discharging her cargo in one of the lower roaches, and then it may be possible to tow her off before we are frozen up. There is a ramour of our local Shipping Report being formed into a sheet, the size of letter paper, and published as a newspaper

We chronicle a few sales in this stock yesterday at 24 per share premium, and have now to report further sales at the same rate. The inquiry for the Ice Company's shares at 123, as we anticipatel, did not lead to business.

A Rifle Club has been formed in Tientsin, and a fine range secured eight hundred yards long, beyond the defence wall, so your crack shots had better keep up their practice, for we have many eagle-eyed inen here who delight in ringing the ball's eyes, and it will be an easy mat- ter to have friendly contests, now the electric wire unites us. The war-vessels Ashuelot and Morge are getting housed over for the winter. Can it be true that the Cross of St. George will be con- spicaous by its absence during the win- ter at Tientsin? The Admiral might have sent us a gunboat, even if only a little one, to cheer and comfort our lonely British hearts through the long and dreary winter. Your recent ob- servations on the working of the guns in the new gunboats are very just, what is required are four seaman gun- ners, who have been well trained, and ngnonery lieutenant for such guaboats, these men will do the work for which they come out and will able to teach the orews the practical working of the guus.
