TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.

THE GREAT NORTHERN TELEGRAPH COMPANY (amalgamated with the ORIENTAL TE- LEPHONE COMPANY, Limited, as regards Telephone Lines in Hongkong and China) with transfer of Alexander Graham, Bell, Aruitold White, Frederic Gower, &o., &c.

The Central Office will, if practicable, be open to the general public so that, any person can thence communicate with the Subscribers. For this service uoi-subscribers would have to pay a sinall fee nccording to the time they occupy the wire.

When wishing to use the Telephone, Subscriber will only havoto call the Contral Station and give the name of the party, h wishes to speak with, the wires are thou. immediately switched together, and the two Subscribers will be ia direct communication with each other. When they have finished, the Contral Office is notified to that affect by a Bell Signal, the wires are thon disconnected, and any other connection can,be made if desired and so on. The dialogue between the subscribers is of course quite private and can only be hoard by the two parties concerned. It should distinctly be understood, that the massage are not spoken to the Con.. tral Office, and thence transmitted to the person to be coinmuniented with, but the two wires are simply switched together, thus forming one continuons line, over which conversation can be 'carried with perfect ease and privacy.
