The 3rd Regiment having boon recently" kilted" and inado the 2nd attalion of the 42nd, has been, christe- ed the "Southsea Islanders" by the ortsmouth folk.
The Onrdolia, the last of the Comus gs of corvettes, has been launched Portsmouth dookyard. She is ilar in every respect to the Cunadu, fioh was launched a few weeks sinco the Crown Princess of Germany, da detailed description of which np. dred in our column at the time. It is fficient, therefore, to state that these essels, of which there are nino, are fird-class cruisers, built with iron ames and steel-plating sheathod with wood, and coppered; that their engines are 2,300 indionted horse power; and hey are aged with fourteen guns; heir longth is 225 ft.. their breadth 144 ft. 6 in., and their displacement. 2,880 tons. The engines of the Cor- delia have been made by Messrs. Ren- nie. The dockyard had been thrown open to the public, and the day boing fine, a great crowd assembled at the slip at which the ship was reclining. On the platform, at the vessel's stora, were Admiral A. P. Ryder, Prince and Princess Edward of Saxe-Weimar, Rear Admiral T. B. Lethbridge, Cap- tain Sir Calme Seymour, and other naval and military officers. The core. mony began with the usual prayers, read by the dockyard chaplain, the Rev. G. W. Clemenger. The ship was then christened by the Hon. Mrs. Foley, wife of the Admiral Superio- tendent, who after a brief interval cat the ropes, releasing the weights and knocking away the dog-shores, The ship hung for a few seconds, but then #glided gracefully down the inclined plane into the barbour amid the strains of "Rule Britannia" from the band of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, and the hearty cheers of the spectators. The Cordelia will be at once taken into the steam basin for the reception of her machinery.
AMOY.
Wo hear that there is a chance of the Detached Squadron calling at Amoy. on their way to Hongkong.
While one of the seamon was clean- ing the copper on the main-mast head
the Feihoo this morning he missed hold and fell to the deck, a distance of about 30 feet, fracturing his skull, breaking his arm, and receiving other serious injuries. The wounded man was promptly taken to the hospital and attended to.
We are happy to be able to report that the measures taken for raising the Isteamer Pakhoi have been crowned with complete success. On Saturday morn fing November 26th the decks were Seealed up and at about one o'clock she glided easily off the rock in tow of tho China Merchants' steamer Les Yuen which steamer had remained in port to render this assistance. The Pakchot is now beached above Ebmungkang, nearly opposite the Brown Rock, the cause of her misfortune. Amoy Gazette.
