COLLISION IN THE HARBOUR.

The Bowen stormed round from Aberdeen this motaing, "having been docked there, and when entering the harbour and nearly abreast of the Patent Slip, collided with the steamer Solway. The latter vessel was bound for Singapore and was leaving the port on her voyage there whou the collision occurred. The Bowen reversed her engines before the two vessels touched, and had, it is stated, actually gathered sternway, so that the collision was not of the violent nature it might have been, Nevertheless, the Bowen had her foro-yard brought down by the run and a plate bulged in, but fortua. ately the plate is above the deck; her starboard anchor stock and accommo- dation ladder were also carried away. The Solway shortly after put about and anchored near Green Island, but has since sailed, and the damage she re- coived is not known.

THE LOVER OF LOUISE

A rumour is at pressut flying through the city, to the effect that Canon Duck- worth has, within the last few days landed in Sydney. So far as wo pre concorned, we give no credo co to it, although a country contemporary is positive as to the advent of Prince Leopold's late tutor amongst us. If this be really the case, there will be some fattoring of little hearts at Darling Points, and many will be the white fingors at Ashfuld basy upon smoking caps and Berlin-wool slippers. In ap- porrance, Canon Duckworth is a re- markable man. His face is singular handsome, his figure tall and athletic, and his voico peculiarly clear and melo. dious. Ho conoho. We are quite willing, should the young Canon be here, to extend the band of friendship to him. So, let him give us a call, and we will see if we cannot look him up a few back numbers, and give him an ordor or two for the waxworks.-Bulletin.

As a rule, however, he knows rather less of cos. tames than he does of the way the seasons are sub-edited. The result of the countess's tour, therefore, has been distracting. To read that her ladyship's skirt was made "entrain of magnificent white cat velvet, deeply trimed round the bottom," gave glimmering of com. mon sense, but when it comes to a fur-TO-DAY, 2nd December,-- ther ornament of "plisses of white satin, and innumerable rows of white point d'Alencon lade," the male un

The Shanghai Courier correspondent at Ningpo, writing on the 23rd alt, says that the Danish schooner Nudeshda, Captain Brodersen, for Chefoo, arrived hero yesterday, at 5 p.m., with loss of four anchors and chains, foremast and mizzen-topmast, but otherwise unin- jured. She reports having encountered a brisk gale from N.W. On Saturday afternoon after passing Volcano lig thick foggy weather rendering nav gation very dangerous was encountered, and she dropped anchor, but finding that one was not sufficient a second was let

Being now close on top of the rocks at the North end of Kintang Island; the fore- mast was cut away and preparations made for leaving the vessel to her fato, However, in a few minutes more the an. chors took the ground and the vessel ceased to drift. The Taotai responded 'promptly to the Consul's request that a gunboat might be sent to her assistance, and yesterday she was towed up the river by the Ohow On. An attempt was made to recover the anchors, but it was afterwards decided to slip the chains, consequently on her arrival here the A woman applied to a Magistrate schooner had to make fast to another for a summons against a neighbour. vessel; until some now ground tackle can "She called me a thief, your Worship. be procured. I have also to record the departure of two old resident missionarios, Mr. and Mrs. Goddard, who have been here now for over 15 years without going home. The scone on the jetty was really touching. A large number of Chinese, men, women, and children, assembled -to bid adiou to thoir friends and bene factors, many of them boing moved to tears at the thought of how much they were losing in parting from these old friends, who had been the means of dis- porsing their haathon darkness with the light of Christianity.

After the officials of a Kansas town had vainly endeavoured to disperse à mob a minister mounted a box and made the simple announcement A collection will now be taken up The result can be easily guessed.
