TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONGKONG TELEGRAPH."

SIR,So much has been said lately against the Governor by the Daily Press, and after having read its leading article of this day I presume every one will agree with mo that the Daily Prost lays fault with the Governor for the recent attack at Tytam in which the life of a policoman was lost and the piratical attrok made on the two reported missing gentlemen not too far from Hongkong watorn consequent on His Excellency's mal- administration.. I think the propor course for the Daily Press now, for its vindication,

Municipal Commissioners towards the reception of the Royal Princes has been decided against such an appropriation, it having been ascertained that the Commissioners have no power to alien- ate Municipal funds for that purpose. We hear, moreover, that the Commis- sioners have received an intimation warning them they will be prosecuted in the event of their doing so.

Some of the leading Chinese rusi- dents attended at the Chartered Mor. cantile Bank, a fow days ago, at the request of the Hon. F. O. Bishop, who sought to secure their co-operation in the movement for the reception of the Royal Princes, which was readily promised. Wo hear, however, that there is some disinclination on the part of many Chinese traders to ranko any display on the occasion, there bo- ing a great deal of soreness regarding the restrictious imposed, and the delays and annoyances incurred in procuring permits for processions and other core. monies hitherto permitted.-Singapore

The military spirit in la bolle France would appear to be on the increase. We read that Marseilles has now a volunteer corps, composed chiefly of

young mon.

The members doubtless mean well, but at présent their appear- ance is not very formidable. We are told that they wear a simple uniform, while as yet their only weapon is an alpenstock, "with which they do bayonot exercise." This noble band of patriots hope that in time the Go. vernment will provide them with "shooting irons," but at present they scem determined to do the best they can with the materials at hand. Still

the picture presented by a company of men prodding the air in imaginary conflict with alpenstocks must be really comic. We presume the officers' um- brellas serve the purpose of swords."
