delightful, but strange to say only a The weather this morning was simply very small number of "sports" turned Those who at the race course. stayed away missed a treat, as advan- tage was taken of the good going by most of the trainers to "pow" their subscription griffins. It is a very good plan to waste no time before finding out what your ponies are actually made of, and there cau be little doubt that these preliminary trials, while the animals are in the rough, prove very valuable to trainors, by indicating either, the merits or defects of the ponies, so that the course of training best suited to the special requirements of each may be adopted. We are re- luctantly compelled to admit that the subscription griffins-in the rough- or at least those we have seen galloped, are anything but brilliant specimens of the genus racer.

THIS DAY, One P.M.
The only business transacted in the share market since our last issue has been in con- nection with Docks. We stated yesterday that the stock was firm, with an upward tendency, and our anticipations that a rise in the price current was imminent have been verified to the letter. Something like 400 shares were sold at 25 per cent. premium, and then the supply immediately ceased. Buyers offered 26, and then 27, but still no shares were forthcoming. Various attempts have been made this morning to renew no- gotiations, but so far as we have been able to ascertain not a single share has changed bands. The subjoined quotation, 28 por cent. premium, may be accepted as the pre- seat market rate, and we doubt not that business will be done at that rats during the
course of the afternoon. No other stock has been inquired after.

Of course a few weeks' training may improve matters wonderfully, but it is hardly likely that the Derby winner will spring from the subscription inob. Our Canton corre- spondent sends us a very glowing account of three griffins located at the City of Rams under the care of Vicomte D'Arnoux, and we are quite prepared to see the chesnut in this team turn out something better than the ordinary run, The powing this morning appeared to give lively satisfaction to most of the owners concerned. Mr. Henry's smart little brown again exhibited good form, and the dun and, black in Mr. W. M. Morgan's stable covered the ground at a fair pace.
