It has been said in some quarters that the Portuguese have a direct interest in keeping their Macao subjects in the dark as far as possible, so as to prevent their competing with any prospects of success for the higher appointments in the Government ser- vice; but this is mere hearsay. Those who side with Padre Carvalho object to the Commercial School on the some what peculiar grounds that it is detri rental to the interests of the colony because it gives the young men an in- ducenient to leave for other parts for more lucrativo employment embuing them with English ideas, and teaching them to scorn their mother country. This information is merely the general gossip of the place, but I will make inquiries, and send you reliable parti culars of the whole business in the course of a few days. I believe it is certain that the amalgamation of the Commercial School with the proposed Lyceum has been definitely decided où; but under what terms and condi- tions I am unable at present to say with any degree of authority.

Their Scarnichias and Dr. Lucios are merely government attachés, willing to side with the wind whichever way it blows, and, as a consequence, they are quite unable to make any real effort to stom the current of militarism and centrali sation. MUTENY ON BOARD THE "ANNA

BERTHA" AT NINGPO.

The following account of a serious mutiny on board the German barque Anna Bertha is taken from the Shang- hai Mercury :-

captain would not allow them to, also from the circumstance that though they got possession of the loaded revolver they did not discharge it at either the captain or mate, sympathy rather ran with than against them, until on Satur- day, a quantity of arms, etc., were seized by the . M. Castorns in the fora hold of the ship. This latter disclosure, however, has rather reversed the tables, and they are viewed as an ill-intonding lot, if only it should have become worth their whilo. Fortunately for the ends of justice, a Customs officer was on board at the time of the mutiny, and on his evidence doubtless, the true facts of the case will be elucidated and a perfectly just vordiet found. The woun- ded Celestial sailors are progressing favourably, though it is feared that man whose hand was mutilated by the ball, will probably never recover the proper use ofit; the bullet was clean cut, wedge shape, by its passage in between two bones (which were smashed) of the back of the hand. The ball extracted rom the leg of the other man, had not. fouched bone, but was within an ace of tsevering the main artery of the leg The balls were not large ones by any means. Opinion seems to condemn the captain for not allowing the men to go to the Consulate when they wanted to.

Ningpo, Sept. 9th, 1881. I write in haste to let you know that a muting of a serious character is reported to have occurred on board the Anna Bertha, which arrived yesterday from Keelung, with a cargo of coal, consig ned to Mr. Moses, I believe. This vessel flies the German flag, and the crow is, on dit, rather a rough Chinese one. No particulars of the affair have got about yet, oxcopt that swords, pistols and knives were all called into requisi tion in the scuffling. Ono man was wounded with a sword and another was shot through the hand, our Polios forco and their energetic Majorare, they say, quite delighted at being able to "show-leave the ship; the Captain refused; up." The snipe may get a rest" now if ¡ILM's Vies-Consul rots a caso on.

September 19th.

Of the tragedy onacted yesterday en plein jour (within 39 yards of the British Consul's windows, and almost at the foot of the garden of Pilot Hoare's house, for such was the posi- tion in which the Anna Berth was and is lying) a clear hoaring will be given to-day at the German Consulate.

The Captain, it is said, was about to leave for Shanghai, but his crow said he could not go unless he paid them more wages in advance, hence the row arose. The mate, I believe, seeing that the Captain had taken up arins also armod himself with a sword, with which he did some harmless execution, but the Captain had to jump overboard and the crow following him in a sam- pan and struck him down every time he came to the surface.

The Captain has been rather severely maule and may congratulato himself on being alive' to give his evidenco, and let us hope, a life-long gratitude squared" beforehand. Another rato Mr. Pilot Hoare who, poresiving a priest-ridden hot-bed of rampant bi-mour to the effect that Governor Grapa from his windows what was going on, gotry like Macao, any independent has received his couge, and that Senhor sprang into his sampan and was just in titution for the instruction of the Vasco Guedes will succeed His Exoel- time to rescue him from a watory and rising generation could not fail to meet loncy as Governor of Macao has boen bloody grave. opposition from the clerical party.
