The princes remained on board the Inconstant until the after- noon, when they landed with their tutor (the Rev. Mr. Dalton), and were presented to the Governor."

His Excellency gives a dianer to- morrow night, at which the princes, Earl Clanwilliam, the officers of the flcet, Prince Louis of Battenberg, and the principal naval officers now in Sydney will be present,

Considerable excitement has been caused in the Inverell district by the rumour that two cases of smallpox have occurred at Tingha-one a European woman and the other a half-casto Chinese girl, both living in the same house.

MELBOURNE.

7th July. Sir Bryan O'Loghilen bas commenced the task of forming a new Administra- tion. Mr. Murray Smith has declined the office of Colonial Treasurer, which was offered to him.

Monmouth is first favourite for the Melbourne Cup and Derby.

8th July, The detached squadron with the royal princes on board left Hobson's Bay at 1 o'clock to-day.

The Governor gave a ball last night in honour of the princes, which proved a very brilliant affair. Some con. stornation was, however, occasioned during the progress of the ball by the fall of a large piece of the cornice of the room, weighing about 4 cwt. It fell with a tremendous crash amongst the guests, and oue gentleman was badly injured, whilst several narrow escapes occurred.

11th July. Mr. M'Bain, M.L.C., was invited to join Sir Bryan O'Loghlen's Ministry. but he declined. He has, however, consented to represent the new Gov. ernment in the Council pending the re-election of Dr. Dobson,

NEW ZEALAND.
