LATEST COMMERCIAL

INTELLIGENCE.

Friday, August 5th, 1881.

One o'clock P.M. Yesterday afternoon witnessed. quite a large amount of business transacted in various stocks, most of it, however, being of a speculative character. The first blow was struck in the Dock Company's stock, which has lately been in a bad way, and although not a single share, so far as our researches could discover,

Banks con-

changed hands for cash, time bar- gains at 53 premium for the end of the month, were both numerous and important. It would be difficult to" exactly define the cash status of Docks, so that our quotation 53 % premium, sellers, must be understood to be merely nominal. tinue weaker, as they naturally would do after the great rush of last week, although there are no tangible reasons from a business point of view, why they should have declined even two points. The shares are now offered at 115, and for cash we believe that offers would be closed with at a lower rate; although it is right to add that nothing worth mentioning has actually been done. The most important transactions have been in connection with Sugars, a very large amount of transfers for the end of the month having been booked at $160 per share. Hotels are on offer at 110 without finding, purchasers; and Steamboats are still quoted at the old rate, $26 per premium, ex. div.

The late Vicar of Sheffield, the Rev. Dr. Sutton, once said to the late Mr. "Mr. Peech, a veterinary surgeon: Peech, how is it that you have not cal- led upon me for your account"? "Oh,” said Mr. Peech, "I never ask a gentle. man for money!" "Indeed," said the Vicar, "then how do you got on if he does'nt pay?"" "Why," replied Mr. Peech, after a cortain time I conclude that he is not a gentleman, and then I ask him !"

But the melancholy unevad- able truth is that all this appears to the people of New South Wales as so much professorial cant-in effect, little better than the contention that "the beat justification of the British domin- ion in Australia is that the English race is acting as trustee for the benefit of humanity." In Australia, as in America, the mastery is with the many; and we may rely upon it that the largest language about trusteeship for the benefit of humanity, and the closest argument drawn from the prin- ciples of free trade, will equally fail to convince the working man in New South Wales, that he ought to let in the Chinese to underbid him in the In. bour market. The same arguments which have resolved the Americans to be rid of the Chinese will prevail with the Australians; and we doubt not that should the Celestials flock into England they will meet with the same objections from our own miners and mill-hands.
